I went to a doctor today, and she suggested putting me on Plaquenil. She said it would build up my immune system, and it was also used to treat Babesia. I tested negative for Babesia, but I did take Mepron once just to be on the safe side. Mepron never improved my symptoms. The doctor did not want to put me on abx for lyme because she said I had chronic lyme and not acute lyme. She said I just needed to build up my immune system. This did not make sense to me especially since lyme is the reason for my depleted immune system. Has anyone heard of this? Has anyone taken Plaquenil?

I take plaquenil along with Biaxin and Doxy, was told the plaquenil just gives the abx a boost start.

I"ve been on plaq. for about 2 years, rotating many other abx in and out while treating lyme and coinfections...

plaq is an antimalarial, can be used to help treat babesia, can also be used primarily to change ph of blood so other antibiotics can get INTO the cells to be more effective in killing intracellular lyme, also is a cyst buster so it works that way..is also an antiinflammatory, so it works to help with joint pain etc...

never heard it used as an immune buster..but doenst mean it can't work that waytoo..maybe a new finding!

I've been on 400 mg of plaquenil a day for over two years, not specifically for lyme, but as a DMARD (disease modifying arthritis drug). My doc has never mentioned immune boosting properties (though I do have a very strong immune system). At the same time I've been on a number of oral abx (doxy, cefzil, cipro, levaquin) and now IV rocephin, and I've never noticed any adverse effects that I would pin on the plaquneil.

Plaquenil is an immune system supressor and can be used to treat autoimmune diseases like SLE and RA.

From what my LLMD explained to me and from what I've read it doesn't boost the immune system at all.

Acute vs chronic.....doesn't sound like this doc is really with it. Sorry it didn't work out.

I found it to be very helpful and actually started feeling much better while on it.

Make sure to get a base line eye exam with a good eye doc.If you remain on it ,good idea to check in with eye doc on a schedule to watch for any effects.

My eye doc thought it was a very good med.
I really did notice improvements in the joints, knees, arms. Good luck with it.
