Well I finally got approval from the ins co to go ahead and start the IV therapy. This was after being denied my initial request and appeal. My husband works for a Union - and the benefits people there said that the ins co never should have denied it.
Thsnks for all of your help.
And if anyone else ends up in this situation-keep fighting

If anyone is on IV Rocephin - experiences/comments would be greatly appreciated

Our son has been on IV Rocephin for 6 weeks. Very slight improvement in pain, worse with fatigue, chills, sweating.
The PICC line was a piece of cake. Local anesthetic, insert the line, took about 20 minutes. Watch out for herx's though. Can definitely intensify, however he's tolerated the IV's themselves very well.

Kare, My daughter has had 2 picc lines..They were much better than the weekly peripheal IV line route she is now taking..It has been horrible with them.

Just be careful, keep it dry..We found that the new glad wrap and tape at top and bottom of the glad wrap worked well for showers..

Make sure they put a stat lock at the bottom of it to help to keep it in place..

Also keep an eye out for a fever, redness or swelling..The second one developed a blood clot..This was after a few months of use.

And do not fall asleep while infusing or never leave the clamp or valve open..WE had air embolisms..

Despite the problems, it was so much better..

My daughter had to go the IV route because her stomach could not tolerate the strength of the meds that were needed and the orals that she could take were not crossing the blood brain barrier to attack the bartonella.

Good luck..

Congratulations! I would just caution you to be sure your LLMD continues your Lyme treatment with orals when the IV is stopped. Otherwise, you will relapse bigtime.

Hope this gets you well!

Just a note on keeping your pick line dry. I buy veterinary gynecological gloves that go up to the shoulder and rubber band it. Really works well. Avoid the product that is advertised to keep casts and picc lines dry by sucking the air out. My home health nurse has seen cases where the force is so great that the picc line has come out or the pressure on the valve is changed and air gets in. Good luck.

GOOD FOR YOU!

Never give up!

Sorry you had to fight.. but glad you did.

As for the IV....

1. The first time is pretty weird... and that is a normal feeling.

2. Within a few days you will be an expert at doing this.. so not to worry.

3. If on IV Rocephin.. be sure to eat extra servings of jello at each meal to keep the medicine active in the veins a lot longer.

4. Please ignore statement # 3 above. I was just pulling your leg to see if you would believe it... or not.

5. Be sure to use the potty BEFORE you start to infuse. It's a pain to try and drag an IV pole to the toilet.

6. You might consider doing a gall bladder flush? It may help save you from gall bladder surgery?

To "flush" the gall bladder.. take a teaspoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of olive oil and drink it down.

I prefer to use it on a salad instead of trying to drink it.. so that might be an option?

Be sure to stay close to the bathroom the day you do the "flush".

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress. OK?

Good evening Kare,

I was on Rocephin for about 5 months...and did quite well with it.

Be sure to speak with your doc about taking Actigall, it is commonly prescribed with Rocephin to help with protecting the gall bladder.

One thing to keep in mind, is that Rocephin packs a wicked emotional herx for many...so, if you find yourself wondering what happened to your smile...you can blame it on the drug.

My best,
Melanie
