My teenage son initially did a 30 day doxy routine[400mg p-day]in Dec. 04.

He's been on IV rocephin [2gm p-day for 9 weeks, and will finish it in a week.

He started mepron one week ago
[2 tsps p-day], and when stopping the rocephin, will immediately go to IV zithromax, next week.

Has anyone done zith through a PICC ?
Good, bad, indifferent ?
Things to look out for ?

Good evening,

I too followed up Rocephin with Zith...but through my hickman.

It packed a whopper of a herx, so I had to stop all meds for awhile and then, pulse it back in gradually.

I think the reason I had such a difficult time with it was because it was the first med to tackle my Bart.

Overall, it was a very effective protocol for me. Best of luck to your son!

My best,
melanie

Thanks Melanie,

I read where Burrascano even mentioned that zith through an IV, and whamo ! Can cause big time herx !

My son was doing better on rocephin [finally], but now that we've started mepron, he feels like garbage again. Lots of leg pain, fatigue, chills, sweats. So, it looks like he's herxing on the mepron already.

I can just imagine what kind of herxing he'll do when the zith hits !

The kid will be able to take aerial photographs of earth from the orbiting he'll be doing !
Thanks for the heads-up.

Goodness, I hate to hear how he is suffering already.

Just please be very cautious...stay in contact with your doc...and remember to back off if necessary, OK?

I was in a VERY BAD place for awhile...just trying to tuff it out. This is NOT necessary for healing.

But, I have confidence in your loving care...so, I am sure he will be monitored closely.

Hi
IV zith was my first rx of treatment. I did 500mg /day thru my port.

Yes, huge herxing!
Two trips to the ER for me then a 3 day break and then we cut back to 6 days on one day off. That worked well to keep the die off managable.

I made some wonderful improvement with the zith...
got back proprioception, walk into walls much less.
big decrease in pain
memory improvement

Now I'm herxing my way through the wonders of clindamycin.

I hope your son does well, make sure your LLMD is ok with a break if the herx gets intense. The ER wasn't fun!

I did IV Zithromax for two months after four months of IV Rocephin. It helped me but not nearly as much as the Rocephin. I did it through a PICC, too. It was a longer infusion than the Rocephin (about an hour versus 20 minutes for Rocephin) and it would make me nauseous if I ran it too fast, and sometimes even if I ran it slowly. But it was a good drug, especially with Mepron.

Thanks everyone for your input, it's really appreciated !

I'll ask our LLMD to start slow, and work up the dosage over time. He may have that planned already, but I'll make sure.

He did it with the rocephin. Started him at 1gm per-day for two weeks to see how he tolerated it. Then cranked it up to 2gms.

He's been very accomodating, and receptive to our concerns plus, he had lyme himself for 6 years. He definitely knows the routine.

Thanks Annie for the heads up on running it slow. It's not like my son's "dance card" is booked solid, so he has plenty of time to let the IV pump.

Achey, we've been the ER route a few times already, but now that we know more about the herx's, my son doesn't become panicked about it anymore.

I'm assuming we should crank up the acidophilus as well. I've heard zith is pretty rough on all the good flora.
