My son is pulsing IV rocephin and when on rocephin last week had lower back pain (new to him) and found himself eating more because of his stomach feeling different.
Are these signs of gallstones developing????

My daughter had gallstones.
She was nauseated before eating.
Craved and ate carbs and fats. Fat seemed to help her stomach...?
Would avoid eating, then go crazy at night. (partly teen behavior)
Pain would hit after eating.
Painful to have gallbladder area pressed upon by dr. I didn't know to check that way.
Seems like symptoms vary widely from individual to individual.
I think that it is hard for a kid to accurately describe what the pain feels like.
Sounds like you should have it checked out.

Sorry your son is having these kind of problems.
The symptoms may be a lot different for different individuals. For me I would get constant pain of the "rocking kind" (I felt like rocking) which would come on late evening or in the middle of the night. I can't remember if it went through to my back.
Actigall can help prevent sludge and stones - also ultrasounds of the area every couple of weeks can alert the doc and patient of a problem.
Hope you can get some answers. Treatment is tough enough without the unrest of this kind.

Thanks lyme suz and lightfoot. i will call his doctor tomorrow and see if actigall or an ultrasound is needed. He describes it as a knot or the stomach feeling you have when you are starving.

My son was on IV rocephin as well and eventually started having pains in upper stomach near ribs. I would give him milk and they would stop???
Well Dr J had us get an ultrasound and it showed sludge so he stopped the rocephin. I was told its not recommended that children use the actigall.

The pain can be in many different areas. Generally speaking, fats make the pain worse and/or cause attacks.
I had pain first in my breastbone area, like severe heartburn, then later in the upper stomach area around the ribs [right side], then it would wrap around to my back above the waist.
I also had pain in my back, right below my shoulder blade. Then of course, there's the bloating and gas! My, I'm glad to be rid of that thing!!

Lymetoo and everyone - else what did you take instead of the rocephin?
My husband and I are not going to have him take the IV this evening. (He's a skinny 22 year old.) Dr. B. on Long Island is his doctor of two months and I hope tomorrow they recommend an ultrasound.

My 14-year-old daughter, who has been on Rocephin for 4 weeks, yesterday started having stabbing pains in her upper abdomen, in the center just below her ribcage. It's sore to the touch. She is having a gall bladder scan this afternoon. Since these are the first stomach pains she's had, I'm hoping we've caught any problems soon enough, but won't know till later I guess.
One surprise was that she can't have any food or drink before the scan. Fortunately, she was still asleep when I called the doctor this morning. Had it been a little later, she might have already had breakfast and I guess we would have had to wait until tomorrow.

Maybe I will see you at the hospital - Fair Oaks. Dan was also sleeping when I made arrangements so he hasn't had food or drink. I am hoping we caught this in time.

LLMD;'s have found actigall does little for developed stones, but seems to work as a preventative..
Actigall can be taken by babies, so it must be safe for children?
My son (14) and I were on it the entire time we took Rocephin as for prevention.
There are also herbs..a few are: arichoke leaf, chinese bitters, boldo, or chanca piedra.. all of these can help clean the GB and even soften stones over time.
You would have to research this and find out all you can about which would be safe as far as interactions.
IF it is a GB problem, also fasting or going on a veggie juice diet for a couple of days, and then resuming a specific diet can treat the condition..there are also Ayurvedic methods that work well.. but you would again have to research, and also be sure that that was the problem.

My daughter had gallbladder scan today that tech said appeared normal, although I think a radiologist still had to look at it. (BTW, VALymemom, we ended up at Reston Imaging Center; Sara was disappointed she didn't get to go to Fair Oaks because she likes the food court)
She still has the pain today; it's been pretty constant for a day and a half now so her doctor is switching her to Claforan, 3x/day. Although I am not looking forward to the inconvenience of administering it, I am eager to see if she has a more significant response to it. After 4 weeks of Rocephin, there were some small signs of improvement, but nothing dramatic.
Can any one else share experiences of Rocephin vs. Claforan? I read about a pump that can be used with Claforan to make it easier to administer. Does anyone know about that?

Lower back pain can also mean kidney involvement. Gall bladder pain is usually up in chest or back shoulder or right under shoulder blades.
