Aaaghhhh! Totally treated it as a joke. Is that doctor a member of IDSA or Ilads?

Not sure if we should bother emailing him or not.

The doctor had three cases supposedly with ticks in them and then prentended one was got him and he ran through the audience screaming and out of the studio.

I didn't see.

I checked over at Amazon and I've Googled this several different ways, and I can't come up with a book about Lyme called "Ticking Time Bomb".

Did anybody get this ahthor's/ doctor's name?

There seem to be differing reports about this here at LymeNet....

Definitely NOT ILADS! Does anyone know anything about the book? Since David Letterman has/had Lyme, then maybe he is 'advertising' the book.

I don't like the method used, however! [shake]

here's more discussion from today:

The entire skit was a joke.

Letterman used to live in New Caanan, Ct., where I was bitten in 1994.

He now lives nearby in North Salem (horse country) in Westchester County, NY...about 45 miles north of the city.

These areas are rife with Lyme Disease.

I will contact a friend who works on the show to see what is up...perhaps we can get Dave to have a REAL expert on the show.

The worst part of last night was that I called a Lyme buddy at that late hour to tell him to turn on his TV!!!!!

Peace, Love and Welness,
JRW

Please see my other post under Letterman disgraces Lyme sufferers. There is nothing funny about this disease, even in jest.I gave my email address and phone number. I want a call back. ( We know it won't happen, but, I gave it anyway.) The book title was probably the first joke in this ill orchestrated parody. The antics of the so called physician was the rest of the joke.

I just completed a search in the library of Congree online catalogue. Guess what? No books titled that. Search results found nothing.!!!!!

IMO -

It would be prudent to consider it satire
'ala Dave', making fun of the IDSA, not the illness. I for one appreciate the PR.

Write him about the children and ask him to privately support Jones' fund. He has a serious side off the air, and a child in a highly endemic area.

I believe Dave Letterman "gets it".

I would not expect him to get "all serious" all of a sudden about this subject. His show is not set up that way and never will be.

I would be cautious about negative feedback when it may serve no useful purpose - and furthermore, he could be an ally, even if he is a confidential one.
Ask him to fork over some big bucks for Lyme kids.

Here is the segment synopsis on his website -

it's satire which is typical on his show, I believe Dave "gets it" :

DR. CHARLES WESTFALL: He's a tick expert at the Parasitology Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health and the author of the book, ``The Tick-ing Time Bomb.'' Anyone who watches the show regularly knows that Dave has a fascination about ticks. He's been on the tick bandwagon long before it was hot in the news, so this booking came as no surprise to me.

Dave mentioned earlier that only 1 in 200 of the common deer tick is infected with the Lyme Disease. And it is not fatal. Dr. Westfall expands on this. He then talks about the more lethal Rocky Mountain deer tick. The doctor brought along some live tick samples for us to examine. So tiny are they that they are hard to see. We ``see'' the common deer tick, a tiny speck no bigger than a poppy seed. Next is the more dangerous Rocky Mountain deer tick.

Dr. Westfall becomes slightly alarmed when he cannot spot the tick in its case. Dave points to Dr. Westfall's wrist and asks, ``Is that it right there on your wrist?'' Dr. Westfall looks at his wrist and screams out, ``Oh my God, it's a Rocky Mountain Deer Tick!'' He jumps up and screams that he is infected by the deer tick. He runs across the stage holding his wrist away from his body but it is too late. He feels the tick disease already running through his whole body. Dr. Westfall begins to frantically scratch at his head and face. He is indeed infected. In a complete state of panic, Dr. Westfall runs out the back of the theater screaming like an hysterical (add your own stereotyped person/race/gender). Dave, confused and faking concern, says, ``He ain't coming back.''

------------------------------------------------

Consider writing him to support the kids and Jones.

[woohoo]
