My 3 year old is taking quick, deliberate gasps of air similar to what you would do if you were holding your breath to go under water. Otherwise his breathing is completely normal. Has anyone ever experienced this? Cannot see pediatrician until Fri.. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Is he stuffy in the nose or has he had a "cold" lately? History of cough or wheezing? Does he breathe this way while napping or sleeping? Sometimes when the adenoids are swollen it can interfere with breathing.

My daughter did this for short time when she was a toddler after she had a cold. She got used to breathing from her mouth with a cold. It was more or less a habit but she did stop in a couple weeks and it was nothing to be concerned about.

Does this child have lyme? If so, perhaps he is experiencing air hunger?

Hey Iamanurse. No he has not been sick at all, nothing out of the ordinary (except for this new breathing thing). Yes, he has Lyme, RMSF and Bartonella that we know of. My pediatrician isin't exactly Lyme literate, but she is thorough and open minded. Was hoping to get some feedback as if this could be related to Lyme&Co before our appt. Thanks for your reply.

Labored breathing can be a sign of babesia, it's a common symptom for babs. Does your toddler exhibit chest discomfort, night sweats, heart palps ? Dead on babs symptoms.

Though your Ped may be open minded, you should seriously consider a lyme specialist, especially with a little one that has lyme, bartonella and possibly babesia.
