Once diagnosed and treated for Lyme Disease, how are subsequent infections diagnosed? Do I remain positive for the rest of my life? Will new tests show new infections? Will tests for related tick diseases show positive after treating Lyme's? Will I ever be able to walk outside and not get infected again?

A: by blood tests

Do I remain positive for the rest of my life?

a: not necessarily; we'll all different!

Will new tests show new infections?

a: YES!

Will tests for related tick diseases show positive after treating Lyme's?

a: I don't know but others will inform you of THEIR experiences!

Will I ever be able to walk outside and not get infected again?

a: I wish I could say YES, BUT we've had members be bitten and reinfected 2 - 4 times!

But you can dress for protection; spray deet; and have your yard as free of leaf clutter, things that attract deer, etc.

Beck,

I know when I first came here, I had so many questions as well. The hard part was, is that I was in a horrid fog and couldn't comprehend so much of what was being said.

Sadly, I think when Betty sent me her list, which is very very extensive and answers sooo many questions, I was still too overwhelmed and couldn't even begin to comprehend even a fraction of all the information until quite some time later.

Although we want to take a cram course, it is hard when we are so sick. Do you have an LLMD? He would be the best one for questions regarding your individual case.

To try to tackle your questions from a non medical view....

You are asking about the lyme tests and will they show new infections, will you be able to see a future infection, etc, etc. Sadly, at this time, lyme tests aren't very accurate.

Columbia University in NY is working on research for lyme and co infections and hopefully better testing will come from this. Many of us went undiagnosed for too long with false negatives, so as to how your test results may read each time, they aren't necessarily enough to go on, since many doctors use a clinical diagnosis anyway.

Good luck to you and when you get some time, start reading Betty's info, but probably in small doses to start out and you will learn so very much and hey...keep asking questions HERE. This board has been amazing for me and so many of us!!!

Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Cathy

Welcome!! As a newbie, you need to know that it's called Lyme disease, not Lyme's. It's named for the town of Old Lyme, CT.

I think betty answered the questions very well. Go to this link to understand more about the testing:

Here is a great link, which contains well organized additional links:
