Construction starts on CDC lab in Fort Collins
Denver Business Journal

The JE Dunn Construction Co. has started construction on a $14 million laboratory project at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention facility in Fort Collins.

The new space will include biosafety labs, with moderate to high-level containment systems. The labs will be located in vacant shell space located on the top floor of the CDC's existing, four-story building.

The new project also will include office and support space, and is scheduled for completion in January 2010.

The Dunn company, with design-build partner Smith Carter Architects and Engineers Inc. of Atlanta, will seek LEED CI (commercial interior) certification for the new space. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is the U.S. Green Building Council's designation for environmentally friendly, sustainable design.

Kansas City, Mo.-based JE Dunn has Colorado offices in Denver and Fort Collins.

The CDC's Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases is located in Fort Collins, having moved there from Greeley in 1967. The division was established in the 1950s to deal with an outbreak of arboviral encephalitis in the western United States.

The infectious disease division is a national and international reference center, providing technical expertise and training for dealing with diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, yellow fever and denque fever.

Based in Atlanta, the CDC is a federal agency created more than 60 years ago to conduct and support public-health activities in this country, including prevention of disease and injury, terrorism preparedness and emergency response. The agency is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Wow.

Fourteen million spent on Lyme Disease research

Would have been something I would have cheered about.

Sigh.

Hugs,

Geneal
