My LLMD was out of the office so I had to see his partner who is just a regular internist and I asked about some Lyme symptoms I was having and he stopped me saying "You are talking to the wrong person, I don't believe in chronic Lyme", so he sent me home and told me to come back when my LLMD was in. Meanwhile, he completely ignored the edema in my foot and for all he knew it could have been caused by a blood clot!

Yes, it seems strange to me too but also, why would his partner see his patients unless he knew it had nothing to do with lyme?
Does your doctor treat only lyme? If not, I would question whether he is really an LLMD. As far as I know, all the LLMD's that I've heard of treat only lyme patients.
In any case, maybe you should go and see your regular doctor about your foot to make sure it isn't a clot or something like that.

What makes a legitimate LLMD? When I say LLMD, I'm thinking "Lyme literate". This is an internist in town who is the only knowledgeable, open minded and educated doctor on Lyme who attends ILADS meetings and is willing to treat me "six weeks after symptoms disappear". He is in a clinic with other doctors and they are all internists who treat everything. I just find it shocking that we live in a very endemic area in CT and yet when I bring up Lyme, I get "you're talking to the wrong person"! Unbelievable.

Actually the very famous LLMD Dr. S. treats other issues such as HIV, weight loss, and erectile dysfunction according to his website.

Good question. There is no "official" definition.
Personally, I consider an LLMD to be a member of ILADS who is a specialist in TBI's. Someone who is actively keeping up with new research and treatment methodoligies via the many conferences that most LLMD's attend.
An LLMD is a doctor who very carefully rules out other illnesses before diagnosing lyme. Also, one who is cognizant of most issues that complicate lyme treatment and incorporates them into their treatment plan as needed. Heavy metals, detox issues, genetics, mold, biotoxins etc. etc...
Bottom line though is someone who can successfully treat complicated, chronic lyme patients. I could add more but you get the idea. Others may have their own definition of an LLMD.
Yes, Dr. S. is an interesting doctor. Prolific author in many areas. Most of the areas that I've seen on his website are compatible with lyme patient issues such as mold, babesia, bartonella, treatment resistant weight problems, sexual dysfunction etc..
I would consider him to be an LLMD but I've never seen him.
