How common is this in lyme disease?

I have a friend (F-38) who had some significant joint pain mainly in hands a year ago (that had resolved), and now recently has gone numb from the waist down.

It is weird because while I was going numb last year, she was having joint issues. My joint issues showed up 6 months after neuro symptoms.

She also has some signs of hypothyroidism and also hormone imbalance.

She is in shock, I think, and doesn't think it could be lyme. TRUST ME, we have discussed it ALL!!

They screwed up her MRI and will have to repeat it, and they haven't really done much of a medical work up on her yet. Never even tested her reflexes.

She hasn't been referred to a neurologist yet and I think they are basically hoping this will all "go away".

After everything I have been through I am freaking out for her.

I just wondered, have any of you experienced this w/lyme? (I know I watched a show about Brooke Landau & she had this happen)

Soonermom,

This happened to me. Before I was suffering from weakness in my left leg, severe fatigue, memory problems and cognitive problems. I thought I was over doing things and needed a vacation.

Shortly after I had bad problems with aches in my right side and kidneys. Thinking I had a kidney infection I went to the ER and was diagnosed with a bladder infection and given antibiotics. A week after finishing the abx I woke up numb from the waste down, a week later it was from the chest down.

Parathesia is frequently caused after antibiotics. Unfortunately modern medicine sees that as a symptom of MS. Although common sense would tell us if an antibiotic caused it then there must be some undiagnosed bacterial infection. Or is it just me? [bonk]

I wasn't numb from the waste down, but I had one whole side of my body numb after five years of being undiagnosed.

They thought it was a stroke and when it didn't appear to be that, it must be in my head?????? I was blessed to have a N.D. run Igenex when the M.D's were failing me.

But I would think that if HALF my body, in my case, the left side, could all be totally numb, then I would expect it could actually happen anywhere in someones body.

Definitely something that should be looked in to and your friend will be so thankful that you were there to lead her in a positive direction.

I know I was so ill at that point that I wouldn't have even been able to THINK for myself, so be patient with her but follow your heart in what you know needs to be ruled out. Good luck.

Cathy

I had that happen. Later my entire body went numb. That's before I was diagnosed. It's very scary. I'm certain that if I hadn't gotten a diagnosis and treatment soon, I would have died. I think when my whole body went numb, I also was barely breathing.

The good news is that most of it went away with antibiotics. I've dealt with numb hands and feet on and off for the past few years, but currently am mostly ok.
