Has anyone had to stop treatment all together because of moderately high liver enzymes?
ALT: 79-700's (normal <40) Liver biopsy normal
LLMD refuses to continue treatment. Been fighting this since Aug '10.

Think Bartonella
(could also be abx's)

I had to stop my treatment due to elevated liver enzymes but my LLMD put me on IV claforen. It's not processed through the liver but through the kidneys, I believe.
Are you are on any liver support to help bring down the levels, such as milk thistle or schisandra?

I have bart and that's the treatment I need to start so badly. Been off abx's since August and started having seizures because of brain swelling possibly due to no abx.
When is it not safe to be on abx?

Yes, we had this happen. Liver enzymes were all normal on Mepron and Biaxin one month and the next month they were extremely elevated. Mepron is known to cause this. Had to stop all abx in November and gone the herbal route ever since. Doing pretty good now.

Sounds like you need to address detoxing or genetic stuff too first. Rifing Maybe?? Your dr is right if your enzymes do not come down after getting off treatment. Try herbals or Byron White maybe?

My son had to stop abx because of high liver enzymes and low WBC. Started treating HPU/KPU once we learned that was the cause (for him).
Look into this as a possible cause. Dr. K. from WA says 80% of chronic lyme patients have to address this issue.

What ABX are you on? Not all ABX will cause elevated liver function test. Just FYI...my ALT was 1000 and my liver biopsy was NOT normal...all because of minocycline. As long as I do not take any tetracycline drugs, my liver has been fine.
My liver specialist said 5000u vit D and 3 cups coffee a day were the best liver protectants so that is what I do. Also, NAC and milk thistle should help.
Great that your liver bx was normal. I have been told to avoid the following liver toxic drugs : rifampin, bactrim/septra, clindamycin.
Obviously wait till your enzymes return to normal. The least hepatotoxic drugs are bicillin, amoxicillin, azithromycin/biaxin. I was told I could also take flagyl, levaquin and several others.

Alpha Lipoic acid should help your liver recover faster. Do a search on it.
So far my liver has been hanging in there but I need to get it checked again as I have been on Mepron 6 weeks. I rely on ALA and Acetyl L Carnitine to keep it going. They are good for kidney function too.
