I'm currently being treated for LD by a reputable ILADS practice and I'm on 200 mg of Doryx (doxy) 2x/day. Testing for co-infections is pending.
I have a borderline ELISA, and bands 23 and 41 are reactive on the WB (from a commercial lab).
My PCP didn't think I even had Lyme - he thought I had something else instead - so I saw the IDSA doctor he recommended today. I know, I know. But I figured it couldn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion on the off-chance he was right.
Well, surprise, the IDSA doc agrees I have Lyme and he was actually taking it pretty seriously.
He wants me to get a spinal tap based on some neuro symptoms I'm having (headaches, numb arm, stiff neck). He said if it's positive, I would need to go on IV antibiotics.
This took me by surprise. I'm gradually improving on my current meds and not anxious to do an invasive test if I don't need to.
So, I would love to benefit of all of your wisdom to see if I need this spinal tap, and what it could show? thanks!

I would stick with the LLMD and be glad the ID doc agreed. Chances are the ID doc would treat you if you had a positive spinal tap, but typically not long enough.

I agree with both responses. The links Lymetutu gave should help you make the decision.
If it were me, I'd definitely not have the spinal tap. Two drs have said you have Lyme and your ILADS Dr is treating. You're improving. I'd stay with him/her!

- Exactly. The ID dr would give you one month maximum to get well. Not well after that? Too bad, he would say. "You're cured!"

That is what my non-lyme neuro said as well. If it shows up in your spinal tap, you need IV (for one month.)
Problem is, Spinal taps "are to look for other things, not lyme." They are not sensitive enough.
So I wouldn't do it.
