I use Omega Brite fish oil and I've never noticed any fishy taste. I've been using it daily for a few months now.
Other brands that I've tried previously always made me have "fishy burps."

Ditto on Omega Brite. It's terrific and easily absorbed. No burps, no aftertaste (and my LDL cut by 10% after a month of switching to it). I've tried them all. By far the best

PS - burps usually mean the oil turned rancid when they processed it.

I like Krill oil. My favorite is NOW brand "Neptune Krill 1,000". It has 1,000mg Krill oil in one soft gel so you only have to take it once per day. You can find it on iherb and probably other places online.

I've gone through 8 different brands of fish oil. Always the same thing--fishy burp with every one of them.

FInally I found this, Fisol Enteric Coated, and not once have I had a fishy burp http://www.vitacost.com/Natures-Way-Fisol-Fish-Oil?bv=product-_-4595-_-RLP-_-21999-_-image_link&pd_section=pr

64 reviews at nearly 5 stars on Vitacost. Reviews on Iherb and other places all good.

Hope you find the right one for you!

Nordic Naturals has some that are strawberry flavored. My doc had me get that brand and I never had any issues with it.

Since I have been using that the whole time I never knew how gross other kinds were until I heard other people talk about how fishy they smelled or tasted.

So I would definitely check out Nordic Naturals.

Gary, that Fisol sounds good, but it's low in EPA, which you need.
OmegaBrite has much higher EPA.

To Skies and Lymeinhell -- Where do you buy your OmegaBrite?
I'm looking for a vendor that's less expensive than the product site.

This may be a surprise to the Omega Brite fans here, but this brand has a higher amount of mercury than some of the other brands. Check this out:

"Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Sundown, and Kirkland brands all showed zero levels of mercury (below 6 ug/L). The Omega Brite brand had 12 g/L of mercury and the CVS brand contained 10 g/L."

http://www.healthy-oil-planet.com/mercury-fish-oils.html

There's another website that lists many of the fish oil mercury levels. I'm trying to remember where it is.

CI, since you're here, what's your favorite fish oil, assuming you use one?

Hi Gary
I want to respond about the site you linked above. This must have required a lot of research on your part and please forgive me, based on that effort, if I have a rebuttal to offer.

quote:
Symptoms of mercury poisoning include itching, burning, skin discoloration, kidney dysfunction, loss of memory and profuse sweating. In the case of pregnant mothers, mercury exposure can affect your baby's brain and nervous system.
Are they kidding?

Try multiple sclerosis. See this video, patient Linda Brocato testifies for the FDA panel about her MS and partial recovery after removing her mercury-containing dental fillings. This is a very powerful live testimony:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-qhxa-3Wbw

Former dentist, now toxicologist and immunologist Hal Huggins has removed mercury fillings from peoples' mouths, only to see their cancer begin to go into remission. With their consent, he would put it back in, and they would relapse. Remove again with their consent, and by golly they would improve. You can read about this in his book It's All In YOur Head.

A dentist I know recovered from Lou Gherig's Disease, in full, after getting his mercury-containing fillings taken out.
Etc....

This makes me doubt the source you have linked, Gary and please forgive me. Again I really appreciate all your research.

About Kirkland brand:

I have researched this and found that they stretch their fish oils with soy (probably GMO) and contain as much as 300 parts per million of mercury, PCB's et al. I regret that I no longer have the link however, sorry about that and am too lazy to research right now. Rrrg.

Nordic Naturals is tested by third party and consistently test at 0 parts per billion of anything. The Norwegian government standards are very high regarding pollutants, and they surpass those standards. No fishy taste at all.

Just wanted to weigh this in.

FYI here a very interesting batch of studies all charted on one page compiled by a doctor, about depression recovery rates (bipolar and regular depression) from fish oils. The doctor said he compiled the weakest studies on purpose, to obtain an unbiased result. The recovery rates are still very impressive, check this out.

Hi Gary
Sorry, our messages obviously crossed in the air! I surely would not have wanted to give you such a blunt response after your question, apologies!

The Mercury Levels in Fish chart is on the NRDC (National Resource Defense Council)'s website. It' s under the Health category. You can google it, sorry I am having computer problems right now and have been hand-copying links, oy! Doing my best....

I use the Nordic Naturals fish oils and love them. I really believe in that brand, but I know there are a few other good ones out there. I wouldn't go anywhere near the Kirkland after what I read about it.

Best wishes to everybody, CI

CI, I appreciate the detailed and interesting information you provided about the site I linked to. I was just trying to find a website that has a list of fish oils and their mercury levels.

I believe what you say is true, however, OmegaBrite still comes out showing high mercury levels even at the link you provided. Seems a bit high, don't you think?

By the way ConsumerLabs website has a comprehensive list of mercury levels in many fish oil brands, but you have to pay to subscribe to it. No thanks.

Gary

I just wanted to bump up this discussion on fish oils.

Currently using carillons finest liquid. Wondering I'd higher ratio of EPA is perhaps better for inflammation...

Would love to hear more thoughts.

Also, is anyone using Nordic Naturals EPA extra?

Gary, I think you are mixed up about the mercury level in OmegaBrite.

When I read the info at this link, http://www.healthy-oil-planet.com/mercury-fish-oils.html
I saw this:

Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Sundown, and Kirkland brands all showed zero levels of mercury (below 6 ug/L).
The Omega Brite brand had 12 g/L of mercury and the CVS brand contained 10 g/L.

Researchers concluded:
All 5 samples of fish oil supplements had negligible amounts of mercury.
Researchers believe this means the mercury is removed during manufacturing process or the fish sources used in these samples are relatively free of mercury.

Researchers found that six 1000 mg. Omega Brite fish oil capsules contains 0.072 g of mercury.
This is equivalent to 2.1% of the mean daily mercury intake in the typical North American population.

So, according to this, the OmegaBrite has negligible amounts of mercury.
