I finally got this RDT from Australia and took it - negative.
However it turns out these little things are even cooler than I realized. It won't just tell you if you're positive, it will also tell you WHAT STRAINS you are positive for -- P Falciparum, P. Vivax, P. Malariae, P. avale, or even a mixed infection.
Unlike any of the tests for our common tick borne infections, this RDT is extremely accurate. You only need to be negative one time to know you at least don't have malaria.
There are some indications that some strains of babesia will cross react with this test but there'sno point counting on trying to find babesia with a malaria rdt. However if you did have one of these floating around and took it and have never left the Midwest, I would certainly wonder.
Each single test is called a lab in a pack and contains a test strip, pipette, lancet, buffer solution and reading instructions.
You can get one for seven dollars plus shipping at Buzzoff.org.

I think it would be pretty simple to develop this with specific Babesia sensitivity. Too bad it hasn't been done yet....

I don't know enough science to know if that's true, but if it is then I'm not surprised. Nothing surprises me about the crappy state of actual medicine anymore.
