I tested positive for Bartonella and was wondering how long the average length of treatment is for? I have done search for this and have seen 8-12 months to 4-6 weeks. I was prescribed 3 weeks of meds and was thinking that this was not enough. Thanks for your help!

Hi june,
supposidly bartonella is one of the easiest of the coinfections to treat. Dr. H had me do 6 weeks of septra ds in combo with the biaxin xl to get rid of the bartonella. I tested positive after that.
I suppose, like all the other lyme diseases it depends on the strain you have, how long you've had it, etc..etc..

I was prescribed 3 weeks of Cipro and Rifampin. I am not happy with my LLMD and am looking for another presently.
What did your LLMD do after you tested positive after your 6 weeks of meds? Curious to know. Thanks again!

I was treated with 4 weeks of Cipro, flaired a couple of times and then felt better. I think its really slow growing, and easier to treat.

Hello,
I was treated with 2 weeks of cipro, then 3 weeks of doxy. After this a repeat test came back negative for bartonella.

Thanks everyone! I guess I will go ahead with the 3 weeks treetment and go from there...I don't like my LLMD but for now I my as well continue and then go transfer to another LLMD. The $500.00 Consult fees plus 4 hours travel doesn't motivate me much unless I know that the new LLMD will treat me aggressively! Thanks again for helping me to decide.

Do you know if you tested positve for Bartonella quintana or Bartonella henslea.. or both.. or something else?

And yes June Bug. I have seen a couple of your recent posts and was thinking.. WHO is this LLMD? Something sounds "off".... I didn't wanna hurt your feelings and say something rude.. but I could tell something... from your descriptions... just wasn't "cool".

This is all encouraging for people with Bart. But what if you've already taken Septra twice or more for like 3 or 4 weeks, does it become resistance easily? And do people develop allergies when starting and stopping like this? cuz I'm not yet allergic to Septra, I think it has been great, but don't take it now, wish I could. thanks, trev

trevor, Everyone isn't that lucky with treating Bartonella. Mine was Bartonella henselae - positive PCR at Med Diag Lab in NJ (Test #317 under Bacteriology at www.mdlab.com ).
In Nov 2001, I was told that a combination of meds was needed.
EITHER Biaxin OR Zithromax AND EITHER Levaquin OR Cipro (Have to be careful of side effects with both of these)
I took: Biaxin & Levaquin for 2 mo Biaxin for 1 mo
A month later, tested positive again.
Took: Biaxin & Levaquin for 2 more mo.
Seems to have cleared it up. Since that time, Rifampin has been mentioned a lot, but I don't know the protocol for using it.
My Bart symptoms were very mild & I thought they were probably Lyme. I think I had Bartonella for a minimum of 5 yrs with no treatment, but there's a slim possibility it could have been 15 yrs.
Don't know if this is significant info or not. Hope it helps.

Trevor posted today, so I was giving a little more info to show that there are some poeple who have more trouble treating Bart.
All these tick-borne diseases are so complex.

Hi. I'm still trying to find info on how long one should be treated for bartonella. I've been on septra and minocycline for one month, and it's not going to be nearly enough.
