You can read the story I found on the CBS site at : http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/01/27/60II/main538144.shtml
Ann - OH
and in a few who weren't ever diagnosed with depression...severe psychosis was experienced.
One man committed suicide as a result.
The folks in Africa (tourguides) knew of the risks..and told a tourist that noone there will take it.
The U.S. gives it to soldiers routinely. There were three murders of armymen's wives (by their husbands) who took the drug around the same time.
The families most seriously affected pushed to have the warnings included on the package insert by Roche..
It seems problems are rare...but when they hit, it is horrific.
I worry about men with guns taking this drug...there are safer alternatives. They mentioned Mepron as one of them.
Goes to show that you have to research everything..

My daughter took it for 4 months about 18 months ago. We did it after much much much research and consideration. It really really really concerned us! It's not a med to take without considering it's side effects!
What we came up with here, was that nothing else was working. Also we felt that if we were aware (especially someone different than the patient) of the possible side effects, that we would monitor the medication VERY closely!
I think a significant part of the tragic problems with Larium was that people had problems but didn't know that it was from the Larium and continued taking the med anyway. That's just my 2 cents.
Sadly though the Lariam didn't help my daughter either through.......
