My son has decided to attend the Barrett Honors College at AZ State, in Tempe (full scholarship-- yeah!!), and I was wondering what the TBD situation is like? Anybody here from around there?? I would imagine there are different "bugs" than we have here in CT.
Thanks,
Cindy

Thanks Lisa.
I bet I'll have a lot of questions over the next few months. We never dreamed he'd go to AZ, didn't even know about the honors program until a few months ago. My bet was on Stanford or Duke. He turned down Notre Dame for AZ, though. Said he did not want to be in debt upon starting graduate school! He did spend about 36 hours there last week taking the campus tour. Other than that, the closest he's been is New Mexico-- the Philmont Scout Ranch.

He does not have lyme, the only one in our family to escape it thus far. And he's a pretty outdoorsy guy (Eagle Scout), and not very compliant with the insect repellant, etc. So I was wondering what he could come across out there. I probably have more to worry about with GIRLS, he said of AZ State, Notre Dame, and the rest, AZ had the hottest girls! Oh my!

Its not very common in the southwest. I know of a very few people who got it camping in Durango mountains in Colorado. I wouldn't worry about it--he's lucky to be in Arizona.

I have to agree with Lisa everyone thinks we do not have a Lyme problem here and it is un true. We do have Lyme in AZ. I have lived here in Az for 17 years. I think I got sick with Lyme about 6-7 years ago. My mother was also just diagnosed and a family friend was diagnosed also. My mom also knows 2 other people who have it also. We are all from Northren Az. And I know a lady whose son tested positive too. Everyone says there are no ticks in Az, and NV, But there are ticks in Phoenix and Vegas because all you need to do is go to the animal shelters and you will see poor dogs and cats infested with ticks. I have a friend who runs a rescue and I foster dogs for her and she has had dogs also with Lyme. I had to have my vet here special order the Lyme vac for my dogs. Isn't it wierd they say it does not exisit in Vegas too but it does vets over there automatically give pets the Lyme vac. So there is Lyme in the desert states, we many not have all gotten Lyme from ticks, like myself I think I got it from masquitoes but it is here and it is hitting us strong! Take care everyone and have a great day!

I agree with Lisa and Lyme Girl, I have seen many ticks in Arizona. My friends who live outside Flagstaff have 3 dogs, and 2 of them have Lyme Disease. There are so many deer on the Kaibab plateau. The are so many mice out there too, all carriers of the disease. I researched this area in Grad School wildlife management quite a bit. the more edge habitat the more deer, the more ticks. The more houses we build, the more the disease will spread as we move further into wildlife habitat.

Having lived in Colorado for 3 years and travelled to Arizona atleast a dozen times, let me tell you, there are plenty of ticks there!

I don't take offense, and I didn't say it didn't exist at all. It's uncommon, though, compared to other areas of the country. So I think its unecessary to worry about her son. Life has so many unexpected turns. Now, if he were attending Princeton and liked to camp a lot, then I'd say, worry a bit.
