Hello,

I have been taking 400mg of doxy and felt like i was getting a yeast infection. I called my doctor and she prescribed 7 days of diflucan.

Now, im not so sure that i have a yeast infection, but to be on the safe side, should i just go ahead and take the diflucan? I have read about people herxing from it.

Im going out of town next Friday so i just want to make the right decision.

Im taking probiotics and watching my diet.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi Jordan,

Yeast is such a common side effect from the abx--and it's also hard to determine the extent of our yeast problem. So I personally don't think it's a bad idea to take the diflucan.

On the other hand, you may as well wait till after your trip if you don't think the yeast is that bad.

I take difulcan for several days each month. I think helps a lot.

I just wanted to add that the pills are 100mg each.

Also can i take the acidophilus along with the diflucan?

I already did and now im worried that i should not have.

Dr. Teitelbaum ("From Fatigued To Fantastic" which is a terrific resource even if you don't have CFS or fibro) outlines a yeast overgrowth treatment program beginning on page 60. He recommends use of several things, including probiotics, nystatin, and diflucan but they are phased in over a period of weeks. He also recommendds 200mg of lipoic acid / day when on Diflucan to protect the liver.

If you do not have a copy of his book and cannot get a copy, email me your fax number and I'll fax the relevant pages to you.

Jordan,

The diflucan I take is 200mg. I take it for about 5 days (in a row) each month.

I do take acidophilus while taking the difulcan--although not as much as when I'm not on the difulcan. I don't know what the "official" word is on taking them together, but I've never had any problems with it.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

Kess: I decided to take all 7 diflucans. From what i have been reading, its ok to take acidophilus along with diflucan.

Suzanne: I read about the lipoic acid. I have been taking milk thistle so i think that will protect my liver as well?!!??

Also, i just wanted to add that I THINK I HAD A REAL HERX YESTERDAY! I was downloading some music and all of a sudden i HAD to go to bed because of the fatigue and low grade fever. My head was killing me and i felt like i couldnt move. Im feel like i have been run over by a hummer today. I will try to take it easy.

I had been running a low grade fever for about a week before yesterday.

Again, thanks to all. Hope your having a good day.

If your doc listened to your complaint and prescribed diflucan, it seems you definitely should take it, unless the symptoms totally resolved with probiotics; in this case, I'd wait, but bring some along if you're going on a trip. I'd bring lots of probiotics, too, and see if I could avoid taking the hard-core stuff, since, as you say, it might be hard on the body.

Herxing from Diflucan is due to the yeast die-off. So, if you herx, you really did need the Diflucan. For me, Diflucan herxes are usually mostly fatigue.

Yes, you should definitely take probiotics with Diflucan. As the Diflucan kills the yeast, you want to be sure you are replacing it with the good bacteria.

I went ahead and started the diflucan treatment. It cant hurt to kill all the yeasties.

Today will be my third pill.

Not feeling too great right now. I had to go and have TWO root canals done this morning!!!!! The party never stops.. Or i could say, if it isnt one thing its another.

Thanks to all!

On some antibiotics, I had no yeast problem. On others, ther was no "natural" way to get it under control. It would hit my mouth all the way through me to " the other end". I was on 100mg diflucan for several years, daily. If I stopped, even for a few days, the yeast came back.
Now, I take it when needed, as the antibiotic isn't too harsh.
