Dairy and supplements containing minerals, especially calcium and magnesium cannot be taken within two hours of taking doxy.
Your other supplements can be taken with it, or if you are taking doxy twice a day, you can take the supplements at your noon meal.

thank you. does that mean i've wasted 1/2 my doxyit just doesn't work when you have that in you? why don't the docs tell you this?

I am not sure now.
My pharmacist said no dairy and suppls within 2 hours of taking Doxy.
However, I looked on the internet and it said that Tetracyclines EXCEPT for DOXY, no dairy. In other words that dairy with DOXY was Ok.

I was speaking to a friend last night about this issue. he read me the results of a study with doxy to determine this issue.
It was done in Germany in 1991. The study found that taking doxy with dairy products reduced blood levels by 20-30%. I have to look this up, because my friend only had a hard copy, no url, so I can't cite it.
But I take all my abx without dairy or calcium/magnesium anywhere nearby.

I've noticed that doctors don't tell patients anything about their meds. They expect you to read the inserts and talk to your pharmacist which, given the demands on their time, seems reasonable.
The doxycyline insert is very clear about how to take doxycycline so you might want to read it again or, if you tossed it, ask the pharmacist for another one. And get a magnifying glass or some strong reading glasses while you are there... :-)
If memory serves (I'm no longer on it), the insert says that it is best taken on an empty stomach but tells you what not to eat if you do eat within the two hours. It can cause nausea which, if severe, can be dealt with by eating. Just be careful what you eat with it. I believe that some minerals and possibly other things bind with it which means you do not get benefit of the full dose.

Unfortunately, the doxy insert will often have two contardictory statements on it.
Do not take with dairy.
AND
May be taken with food or milk.
Mine said both. Some woman actually successfully sued the company because she took it as recommended by the insert and it was not effective.
I asked my pharmacist about this. He said the inserts are provided by some company that just does inserts, not by the manufacturing company. He agreed that it was incorrect, but couldn't do anything about it.
Best is to look at the website of the manufacturing company. They will usually give you more info than the pharmacy insert.

i appreciate all the time and energy you guys have taken. i guess it's not all me and my foggy brain that is at fault here. i got a similar reaction when i tried to figure out the correct relationship between calcium and magnesium. they need to be taken in a specific ratio---but no one seems to know which one. and it can often be different depending on the individual. after 20+ years of dealing with this disease and going in circles and throwing my money away i think i am right when i keep the bottom line as being how i feel from a change. thanks again for all your help.

do these guidelines apply to iv doxy also since they are not initially coming in contact with the supplements and mag, they will be absorbed but the iv doxy is in the blood any ideas?

The only thing that's reduced the intermittently debilitating doxy nausea is cream cheese on a bagel. Tastes good but I think the high fat reduces blood flow to my brain within seconds. I wonder if they measured doxy blood concentrations with nonfat dairy products, as well.
