I hope that someone can learn from our mistake and prevent permanent muscle damage.
Lipitor or any statin therapy for high cholesterol should NEVER be taken while taking Macrolide antibiotics, Erothromycin, clarithromycin, anti malaria medications or many antifungal meds!!
These multiple medications can cause serious and sometimes fatal muscle damage and kidney failure. These patients start with complaints of muscle pain or aching in the quadriceps, glutea femoris. The patients describe inability to rise from a sitting position in a low chair. Often it is thought to be due to lyme disease or herxing.
Nonspecific muscle pain and tenderness and joint pain can be exhibitations of statin induced mypothy.
Myalgia - muscle ache or weakness without creatine kinase (CK) elevation.
Myositis- muscle symptoms of pain and aching with increased CK levels of 3 to 10 times normal levels. Discontinue statin therapy to prevent permanent muscle damage.
Rhabdomyolsis- muscle symptoms with CK elevations 10 times normal or more (usually with brwon or red urine) demonstrates kidney failure This disease results from the toxicity of destroyed muscle cells. A pigment that contains Iron, called myoglobin that exits the skeletal muscle enters the bloodstream after the muscle suffers damage.
The kidneys have difficulty filtering the myoglobin out of the bloodstream because it blocks the structures within the kidney, which can result in fatal kidney failure. Symptoms are elevated CK levels, muscle tenderness and pain.
Anyone taking any statin, including Lipitor SHOULD take CQ-10 200 Mg daily, at the same time, to prevent muscle damage. DO NOT take statins at any time as the above mentioned antibiotics, antivirals or anti malaria medications because this will almost always cause muscle damage.
My mother had muscle pain start after she was put on Malarone/Mepron. She thought it was a herx due to Babesia/ lyme Disease. As it turned out it was a dangerous interaction with the antibiotics, antivarals and malaria meds.
Do not know if the damage is permanent yet but STATINS must be IMMEDIATELY stopped and Welchol lipid lowering treatment to be started for lowering lipid levels.
Please prevent the damage and pain my mother has endured due to not being told by doctor or pharmacist of damaging interactions.
Lyme often causes muscle and joint pain and is often attributed to herxes........... when in reality the pain is from serious statin induced toxicity.
My mother will be tested to see if the damage is permanent or has damaged her kidneys. In the meantime, Magnesium IM shots of 1 gram weekly has helped the severe muscle cramping and pain.CQ!) 200 Mg is a MUST!!!!
Stain users with LYME Disease and muscle or joint pain BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!

Lymetoo,
I have about 50 links but I am not computer savy. How I found them was to go to your search engine, such as Yahoo, and type in Statin Muscle damage or Lipitor induced muscle damage.
my docs and pharmacists all knew i was on abx and diflucan when they pushed me to do lipitor
i REFUSED for 3 yrs and then gave in cuz my primary who i really do like was so worried about me
i'm fat my dad died of a heart attack and my lipid numbers were a little high
3 times i had stress tests and artery scans and i was always ok
but i gave in to her and 6 months after taking it i was in a walker
it took awhile to figure it out...and i did ...but i am still not able to do minimal exercise without severe pain...today i am back in walker and very scared
FIRST OFF!!! NEWBIES PAY ATTENTION HERE...DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!
second...i have been rereading stuff. i realize razzle and ticksuck have some experience o knowledge with this and i hope they will jump in and just give a little blurb about it so you guys understand how serious it is.
cognitive dysfunction goes a long with it so it has been really hard for me to figure it all out. it isnt until i cant walk that i really focus again on what i need to do
i think razzle said it does not have to be permanent - and i hope that is right.
it seems ticksuck had the dx and maybe got over it??? id like to know more...are you able to exercise w/o pain now?
the pain is so specific i at least know when i am dealing with this as opposed to other Bb sx that move around
anyway-i wan to bring this up to everyones attention
i plan to get more organized about the diet graveline recommends and the supps
i want to see a mitochondrial specialist but suspect until i am so bad my CK(?) is pos they wont see me
i hope razzle is right...my understanding is if this is not stopped i am on my way to als.
remember-i am foggy. very. i am trying very hard to read and understnad...but info i give may not be 100% correct.
also...auntie...if you are still around...how did it work out for you...it has been many years
thank you so much for warning us...eally wish i paid closer attention

I personally think statins should be banned. Research has proven that high total cholesterol is NOT what causes heart attacks & strokes.
There is another thread from a while ago on here that talks in more detail about all the dangers of statins...use the search function and see what you can find...

Dr. Duane Graveline, MD, found out the hard way about statins. This guy was an astronaut.
Quote: "I soon realized the adverse reactions involved far more than impaired cognition, including personality change, myopathy, neuropathy and a chronic neuromuscular degeneration similar to ALS and all statins were contributing to these adverse reactions, not just Lipitor."
His site has lots of articles about this.
