Has anyone out there gotten a case of hives all over their body? Could this be Lyme?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got it as a reaction to Claforan. It was not pleasant.

It may or may not be Lyme. If it's an allergic reaction like mine was and you develop trouble breathing, it can be tricky to treat. I would call my LLMD immediately regardless.

Nancy,
Yes, before I was diagnosed and on ABX I broke out in hives on three separate ocassions very close in time to each other. It started with a small itch on my foot which went nuts and spread all over me. The next two times I got smart and took some claritin. Never got it again but skin stuff has been one of my worse symptoms. I have had Lyme for at least 15 years.

Thanks, I have had Lyme for almost 2 years. This is the first time this has happened and my LLMD is away for family reasons.

I did call my pcp and they are not sure what it is but I will be calling them again. I am running out of spaces for the hives.

Nancy:

I got a severe case of hives and then went into anaphylaxis (before being diagnosed). It was the clinic MD that treated me for the shock that decided I should be tested for Lyme. The hives appeared out of the blue. They returned with a vengence when I took a break from abx. I believe it can be from Lyme.

I had a severe hives (all over body and thrush in the mouth and throat) when I started Welbutrin while on IV Rocephin.

What drugs are you taking? That may be the problem. IMO, I don't believe that an all over the body case of hives is actually caused by Lyme Disease.

Keep Benadryl close at hand, and Liquid Nystatin if it gets into the mouth (thrush).

I am on Biaxin and Plaquenil. I've been on the Plaquenil for 5 months and the beginning of June went on Biaxin again from Zithro.

Dr. put me on Biaxin XL but after 1 week my stomach and digestive system were in turmoil so I have been on the regular for a week or so.

I must say Lyme is an up and down thing. Any help would be great.

I had hives from Sulfa drug years ago. Remember, the hives are in the inside too. They can close your throat. Can you go off of your drugs until your doc returns? Dring plenty of fluids to wash the inside also.

Best of luck to you.

Nancy,

Sorry to hear you are going through this terrible time.

Of course I'm not a Dr. but it sounds to me like an allergic reaction as I've had the same reaction to 2 other drugs before. But who knows for sure with this crazy illness.

Also not sure who your LLMD is but it sounds like it might be Dr. D in Boston if it is, have you left a message with his office or tried emailing him /// as he does check his email from time to time and if it is important will respond. Depending on where he is etc.???

Just a thought.

I will keep you in my prayers that you will be feeling better soon.
Hugs,
Swiss

Hi Swiss,
Nice to hear from you. You are right about Dr. D. Have e-mailed him but someone in his family has passed away and he won't be back till Sunday. What did you do about the hives?

I hope you are doing better yourself. Take care.

Nancy

Are you SURE you have hives?

I once had an outbreak that ended up being Erythema Multiformae-an allergic reaction to some unknown-like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, but not as dangerous. It can be caused from allergic reactions to drugs, mold, almost anything.

I've also heard of a few people breaking out with target lesions all over instead of having just one.

Also, if you're on many antibiotics, you may become ultra sensitive to sunlight and the "sunburn" can manifest more like hives than normal sunburn. In any case, I would get it checked out.

You may also want to check out some of the possibilities by going onto Google's images search bank. There are lots of good dermatology websites that come up with actual pictures so you can possibly narrow things down a bit.

Good luck, and stay out of the sun for a while. If it's hives, there's a new Claritin for hives that helped my "doxycycline sunburn," but nothing really helped it for 7 weeks until I showed it to my LLMD, who scolded him for not cxalling sooner. He gave me a cortisone cream called Ultravate that helped also.

Hi Nancy,

Sorry to hear why Dr. D is away.

If I remember (it was a long time ago) I took benedryl for the hives.

But they probably have other things today for it.

Hope you start feeling better soon.

I'm still hanging in here, trying new things.
On IV Primaxin now, starting Flagl tomorrow and then IV Clindimiacin next week.

Praying for something to work soon.

Hugs,
Swiss

I am sorry to hear about the hives.
I know how bad they can be.
For a while, my middle name became HIVES!
It was horrible!
And after a while on IV Rocephin they started to go away for good.

This could be an allergic reaction. Even though you have never been allergic in your life. The thing is that when the immune system of a person is weakened - things that they could normally tolerate will obtain a physical reaction. In other words, you can suddently "become allergic". Try to find a correlation between the food you eat to the hives you get, there may be a relation.

Good luck with getting rid of those little buggers!

Best wishes!
