My boyfriend was recently diagnosed w/ Lyme--he's probably had it for at least 15 years. He's now on Amoxicillin (was on Doxycycline). His GI system is very irritated, but for the last 5 months, he's had an almost constant gagging sensation and trouble swallowing, the dr believes it's associated w/ Lyme (not a panic, etc problem). He's doing pro biotics and the clay detox baths, but that doesn't really help. Has anyone had this--can anyone suggest help w/ these symptoms? Or a great Lyme doc in NY City? We're getting desperate.

My son in law has this problem - his Lyme is so severe that he is on a "mechanical diet" and is living in a nursing home. I had one nurse tell me that he doesn't clear his throat.....what can be done - I have no clue - but my heart goes out to you

Hey there in NY City!

I just made the comment I wasn't going to post any more today because I can't seem to "behave" myself.. but I will try.

There are a number of folks with this problem. I also suffered from it too.. and was quite bad with it. I got to where I was afraid to eat or try to take my meds... for YEARS at a time. I would gag on any pill I tried to swallow... and sometimes even while trying to sip water. VERY scarey!!

I still have a flare of this hit once in a while.. but it is finally MUCH better.

But first thing.. do consider yeast. Is he taking Diflucan or Nystain regularrrrlllyyy? Yeast in the throat can cause this sensation... and it is hard to say what the cause is from just reading a post.. but do keep that in mind.

The next thing...

Cranial nerves.

There is a post.. I will try to find it for you and bring it up. If the cranial nerves are affected this can happen too.

Bottom line...

Antibiotics.. AND.. a chiropractic neurologist helped me.

AND... lucky you.. there is a VERY good one there in NY City... and don't ask me what burrows and townships and islands they are on or in... I don't know NYC geography, sorry... but..

If you go to the link below and check out Chiropractic Neurologists... you can locate one near you. There is a good one... and the name starts with a "T" I think?

If after 15 years of dealing with this nasty Lyme..... well.. I think this would be an excellent thing for him to do to assist with MANY neuro things that are going on. Some take insurance... so do check about that.

I am sorry about your son in law. This may provide some relief for him. If you could get him to one.. chances are he could get help for a number of problems. If I can do anything... let me know.

That's a very disheartening symptom. I have been there. They don't find anything mechanically or organically wrong, and you can still eat and drink, but you feel like you can't swallow. I had this for about a year when I was around 20 -- had lots of tests, including a tube down my throat to measure spasms of the esophagus (if there were any). Nothing found, must be nerves, right? Well, maybe. I didn't get LD that I know of until age 28. (Then it was undertreated and became chronic.) I did a web page and I talk about the throat thing, which came up again a few years ago. www.angelfire.com/ct/lymejourney I had an MRI at that time, but they didn't see anything structural. I ended up just having to wait it out and it was probably the most unpleasant of my symptoms and I dread it. But I don't think it was necessarily LD because I had it so long ago, too. I think it is Chiari Malformation. I have MANY other symptoms which correspond to that -- and Chiari can be made much worse with certain injuries, illness, etc. Do a web search on Chiari Malformation. I'm pursuing that too. Let me know how he makes out okay? He can email me directly if he likes.

I had this and My LLMD said it can be attributed to Lyme. After a - endoscopy & upper GI, I'm inclined to agree.

Hi. In my old life I was a speech language pathologist in an adult rehab hospital and worked quite a bit with swallowing disorders (for some reason SLPs got dibs on this one). They are very common after a neurological insult (e.g. stroke, tramatic brain injury) or in progressive neurological diseases (e.g. Parkinsons, MS, ALS) and Lyme would definately fall into this category!

Thank you so much everyone for your advice! Joan, my heart breaks for your son-in-law, perhaps some of what we've learned will help him. Tincup, I was wondering if you could provide clarification for your extremely helpful advice:

1) Is the Chiro Neuro in NYC that you had in mind called Scott Theirl?
2) Is going to a Chiro Neuro different than going to someone for cranial sacral therapy? If so, which would you suggest as a best bet?
3) Do you know if there is a preferred method of testing for yeast in the throat? I thought that I'd ask...

Thank you so much--we're so stuck, and really scared--this means so much!
