Hi,

If I go to an LLMD who does not take insurance, as many don't. Will my insurance cover the cost of abx that the LLMD will prescribe?

I want to go to an LLMD and can get in but afraid that the meds won't be covered. Please let me know!

Thanks,
M

This was never a problem for me.

The worst thing you could do is ask the insurance company about it. Why put up a red flag if it might not be caught or may not be a problem at all? Just fill the prescription and see what happens.

My HMO, KHPE, pays for all the meds and lab work. I just pay for the LLMD.

Whether or not your LLMD takes insurance has nothing to do with whether your insurance company will cover your prescriptions. In fact, even if your LLMD doesn't take insurance, you can still submit the office visit bills and most likely get reimbursed for some portion of it (unless you must use doctors from a specific list/HMO). We have Blue Cross and, so far, have not had any problems with coverage, except for Bowen and any labs that are experimental (I had sent something to the U of Michigan that was refused coverage). However, it's also always worth the effort to call/write/complain if you don't feel that your reimbursement, or lack of, was right. Letters of medical necessity from your doctor can be very helpful in getting things covered that normally would not be.

Cave's suggestions are 'right on'.

My insurance covers all meds and 75% of our office visits. They did not cover much of the testing.

Ditto, no matter what doctor you see has nothing to do with your prescription coverage...nothing at all. If it is a prescription signed by a doctor and your prescription drug covers that drug, then they will pay.
