I am about to start my lyme treatment again. I have a bottle of Cat's claw (tablets) I have let sit because after initially trying - I was surprised about how bad I herxed.

Is it OK to take Cat's Claw with Abx. Or is Cat's Claw to be used instead of abx? I have never done this. I am also going to start taking Cefuroxime axetil every day 3 times/day.

I would appreciate your help.

Sandy, it is my understanding that Cat's Claw and Samento (the preferred) are totally different things and the one that works best is Samento.

You can do a search, sorry, I am having to go soon to get ready to travel to see Dr. C of MO and don't have the time right now to do it for you.

But, if you do not know how to do a search, Dan has graciously posted a post that will walk you through it.

I'd use the keyword, either Samento or Cat's Claw in the TOPIC ONLY, that way you will not get posts on just where they are mentioned and not any substance on the subject that you are really searching.

I did the same thing. I bought Cat's Claw about three weeks ago. But I didn't want to take it without permission. I saw my LLMD on Thursday, and, without my prompting him, he recommended that I take Samento. Then he followed up by saying Cat's Claw as if they were the same thing.

My conclusion is that they essentially are the same thing and that it's okay to take them with antibiotics.

"Samento is a form of cat's claw from the Peruvian jungle that is superior to typical forms. The beneficial effects of most cat's claw preparations are blunted by the presence of TOA (tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids), which inhibit the real active agents, called POA (pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids).

The latter, more favorable compounds are known to modulate and up-regulate the immune system. Many commercially available cat's claw preparations contain up to 80 percent TOA. As little as one percent TOA can reduce POA effectiveness up to 80 percent.

In addition, the specific species of TOA-free cat's claw contains considerable quantities of quinovic acid glycosides. These compounds are what the latest generation of quinolone antibiotics (such as Cipro) are based on. The natural compounds provide safe and significant direct antimicrobial effects on Lyme disease.

My LLMD started me on Cats Claw while she also had me on 1200 mg Omnicef and 500 mg Zithromax daily so I think its ok to take both.

I take TOA-free cat's claw with four abx, a bunch of other herbs, and DMSA detox. It works very well on the neuro symptoms, and does not react with abx at all.
