I just changed to Amoxicillin. I couldn't afford the bicillin anymore. My pharmacy doubled the price of it.

Anyway, the directions on the amoxicillin say take six 500mg capsules in the morning. Does this sound right? I'm gonna call my doc tomorrow but I was just wondering what you guys thought.

Do you not want to spread them out?
My doctor called in the prescription and I'm wondering if they got it right.

Is Amoxicillin bad on the stomach? Should I eat first? Anyone with experience with it I welcome your input.

Honestly?

I would call the doc immediately and have him paged before taking such a dosage. It's better to be safe than wonder.

....That's only 3 grams. LLMDs often prescribe 6g/day and some go as high as 27.5g/day.

I suppose you could split it into morning and evening doses if you wanted to. I settled on 4.5g/day as my optimal dose.

Amox is easy to tolerate and you can eat with it if you want to.

I read somewhere not to take oral penicillins with carbonated drinks or fruit juice because the acid can interfere with the meds.

yes, this sounds correct...also you may want to ask about taking probenecid with it...amoxil goes right through and you pee it out...probenecid will help the abx stay in your system longer so it will kill more keets...

So I should take all six at once and not space them out?

....Where are you in TX anyway? Since you've got a scrip for bicillin it'd be easy to go to Mexico and fill it....no questions asked.

I've had no problems with the quality of meds from there.

OK I'm no doctor but Bactrim/Septra also reduces urinary flow AND kills parasites(Babs) Which IMHO in combo with amoxicillin did me a whole lotta good.

I did have an MD agree with me on the Bactrim/urinary flow/amox thingy once. Still, it's just my opinion.

I live in the Dallas area. I've thought about Mexico. My girlfriend is actually from there so she could help me with that. I actually want to try something else for a while. The Bicillin wasn't helping me much. I got a little better and I'm just kind of hovering. So if this doesn't help and I have to go back to bicillin I may try Mexico.

Hi Lenny,

You've received great advice from others.

l.) Yes, I agree with you-----talk to your doctor first.

Pharmacists are overworked because they have to fill everyone's individual prescriptions 12X a year.

That in itself is a formula for disastrous medication errors.

2.) The half-life of Amoxicillin is short.
It's baffling to think that one-half of your Amoxicillin will be out of your body in a mere 0.7 to l.4 hours. And that's in patients with normal renal function.

What if you're a fast metabolizer?

Click on Drugs & Illness & look up Amoxicillin.

Here's my amateur viewpoint-------please confirm with your doctor.

It seems to me, that taking 1,000 mg every 8 hours would provide a steady blood level of meds.

It's true, dosages of 6,000 mg daily penetrate the blood brain barrier in patients with inflammed meninges.

With my neuro lyme, I would definitely want to eventualy ramp up SLOWLY to 6,000 mg daily in three divided doses to achieve a therapeutic dose to the BRAIN.

Personally, from what my LLMD told me, is that everyone with Lyme has "some" degree of aseptic meningitis or neck pain/back of head pain. It's due to inflammation-----no fever.

Your LLMD's goal may be to raise you to 6,000 mg Amoxicillin----"eventually."

Anyway as you've said, your doctor should know best.

Listen, I also replied to your other post about Babesia & very much hope you can get a one-month trial run of treatment.....perhaps Mepron/zith.

You're working so hard to get well----you deserve the best care available.

Take Care,
Jan
