David1097 just posted this interesting malarone info in another thread.

"Actually, malarone is in pill form, 3 pills has the same concentration of atavoquone as a mepron teaspoon. It is also cheaper than mepron for some reason. It is a bit less then 1/2 the cost of mepron."

FYI, LLMDs recently compared notes at some conference and decided you have to take 10ml/2x day (which comes to a little over 2 teaspoons twice a day) of mepron, not 5ml, for it to work. So if anyone out there is considering malarone, make sure you ask for enough of it!

right liz,
I take 2 5ml packets of mepron in the am and two 5ml packets of mepron at night...not just one anymore....they found one to be ineffective. malarone also has another ingredient in it....not as strong...

Lisa:

So, are you taking 20mL of Mepron a day? That seems like a lot. I know someone who was being treated for malaria and mistakenly took 15mL per day and started hallucinating & have bad dreams. He had read the instructions wrong.

I don't think I could handle 2 packets 2x per day. How do you feel on this?

I have been taking my mepron since Jan 2004 with TABLEspoons (10ml) instead of TEAspoons(5 ml) twice a day!!

Thanks for posting this, Liz. Just had my mepron script filled and directions say 2 teaspoons a day. I wondered if there was a mistake, because I'm quite sure I only took 1 teas. way back when....

yes, the new guidelines that were discussed at the national conference alll of our llmds went to ,said they should double the usual dose that some of our lllmds were prescribing for mepron..

so , like liz said...instead of one 5ml packet in am and one in pm, now it's two in am and two in pm...that's the new standard , adn that could explain why so many of us weren't getting better on it...

just going by the new guidelines...

Just to add to the confusion.

I started with 1 TABLE spoon 2 times per day.... Did not work

Switched to 1 tea spoon 3 times/day... worked

On relaspe went to 3 tab malarone 2 times per day... worked.

20 ml pr day!? Will your insurance co pay $1700 pr month for this? Wow, does your LLMD have you all have labs taken while on this increased dose of Mepron?

Fingerpaint, here we come!

Can you tell me what guidelines this information is in? I'd like to show it to my MD. Although, I herxed badly on 5mL bid, and I have improved quite a bit. I can't imagine what 2 tbsps. would do to me. I am guessing the Artemisinin I have taken has been a helpful adjunct.

Not sure... what are these packets you speak of?

My mepron is liquid in a bottle. There is a big difference between tablespoons and teaspoons! My two teaspoons is about all I could get down.

In RI all we get are these little 5ml packets. When i saw dr. h last he said that the ilads conference a month or so ago, he found out he was 'behind' the times in treating babesia, in that he wasn't giving the correct dosage of mepron with a macrolide.l.that the other llmds were discussing it , and had reported on their successes with doubling the dosage of mepron to 10mls in the morning adn 10mls in the evening...so that's what he put me on this time...

It's funny, but this is the one time I haven't been slammed with the four day mepron wham! interesting....
