I have been on Mepron and Zith for 2 months and returned to my doctor for followup today. He apparently forgot to tell me to discontiue the Co Q 10 2 months ago when I started the Mepron and I have been taking it ever since. Today, he said to stop it immediately, and to continue the Mepron/Zith.

My question is this.....since I continued to take the Co Q 10 with the Mepron did it basically block all effectiveness of the Mepron I have taken for the past 2 months?

I cannot help but think that I have wasted 2 bottles of the Mepron due to this.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Wow! Ya got me? I just started CoQ10 yesterday. Got a Lyme Dr. appt. Saturday, & I'm gonna ask him for sure. I'm on Vantin. Guess I should have asked him first??

Hi Lizzy,

Good question. I was wondering the exact same thing. My husband was prescribed Mepron, Zith and Tinidizole by an LLMD. He was also prescirbed many supplements including CO Q 10. Due to $ problems we are just getting the supplements. Lo and behold, I am just scanning Dr. Burraxcano's treatment guidelines and it says NO CO Q10 with Mepron.

Does anyone know why?

from what i understand coq10 DOES make the mepron ineffective or less potent....i'm not sure of the mechanics of it, just know my llmd made sure i was off it when i took mepron..

i'm sure others will be along that can describe the mechanics of it..l

I wrote about this on another post, but I believe that all Lyme Doctors (all doctors for that matter) should be writing down the information they tell you during the appointment. It's hard enough to be ill, but to have cognitive disorders and on top of that be on large amounts of medicatons, how can a patient be expected to remember what to take, what to stop, etc. Also, my doctor will say, "see me in two weeks" but the next appointment available will be three months from then! All the nurses are booked as well, so it makes me very nervous! Anybody have the same problem? or is it me?

Lizzy -- the origins of the mepron/CoQ debate are a bit fuzzy. There is no literature on it that I can find.

My understanding from my doc is that Mepron and CoQ are thought to compete for the same receptors. CoQ is thought to reduce the body's ability to take up the Mepron.

But it is not like magnesium or calcium when taken with doxy -- CoQ10 does not completely bind the Mepron in the gut.

Some people have taken CoQ and Mepron and apparently been treated effectively for babs, although I don't know how severe their cases were. Also, I don't know if it makes a difference if the Mepron and CoQ were taken at separate times.

So -- while you might have impeded the Mepron somewhat, based on my understanding you did not render it useless.

You'll be on the mepron quite a while longer (or you should be), anyways.

Are you taking artemesinin too? We found it was a good addition to the mepron zith.

Take care, don't worry, be happy....

But spank your doctor for me, will you?

Somewhere on Lymenet there's a post about herbal/supplement interactons with drugs that are common for Lymies. We probably need to print it up with pretty colors and send it to our LLMDs so that they have a handout...I'll think about it when I get back home.
