I have just changed jobs and took quite a pay cut due to college and now I have no health insurance. Im just wondering how much a visit costs? My GP costs about $60 a visit. I bet the blood work is pretty expensive out-of-pocket too huh?

It's a tough question to answer. My first visit to a reputable LLMD in 2001 $250. This didn't include hundreds of dollars on blood work. Follow up visits ranged from $100 to $150. I'm sure other doctor's charge more or maybe in some cases less.

We need universal health care insurance for everyone and then let's worry about the rest of the world.

My LLMD's fee is around $400 for the first visit, which lasts 2 hours. IF you need to have a WB, that's around $250. You could be clinically dxd, however and leave it at that. Since you don't have insurance you wouldn't need a positive test to prove anything. [except to yourself!]

Follow-ups are around $125 for 45 minutes.

Some are charging as much as $700 for a visit which IMO is outrageous. Try to find one more reasonable than that!

Lymetoo's suggestion is good...why bother with the WB?

Best of luck to you.

yeah I already tested positive so thats not really a great concern except I havent had the co-infections test yet. I have a scheduled follow up yet no insurance.. Hey OZ-- I totally agree.

Even if i aquire insur. again most companies want you to wait 6months to a year for pre-existing conditions.

Thanks for all the input!!

There is a health insurance you can get through the college, you should ask about it. My insurance always covered my visits and lab work..

I don't recall what the first visit cost was, but $55 for add'l ones.

Blood work is very expensive.

I paid alot less for my first visit. It is the same as every visit. I never had to pay a larger "first visit" fee. Perhaps that is because I showed up with all my positive bloodwork in hand - done by my PCP.

I too find the $700 initial consultation fee to be inappropriate. That turned me off to two LLMDS that I had considered, especially since neither accepted my insurance.

I'm sure Daniella is right about insurance through school. In my other life I worked at a University and we offered a health package to all our students. The option was to stay on their parent's plan or to go with the school plan, which was Blue Cross/Blue Shield at the time. You should check with your Financial Aid Officer.
