I have read (if I am not mistaken, which I often am) that you should not take flagyl with the cyclines (doxy, tetra, etc).

So what do you take it with? Biaxin? Zith? Ketek? Or something else?

Can you take it with plaquenil? Or would that be redundant?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.

Any thoughts on flagyl and penicillin? Currently I am taking penicillin 1000mg 3xday. I was wondering if flagyl goes well with this or is it better to use a macrolide?

Also, what do you mean aobut flagyl losing effectiveness? As in developing resistancy?

Hello Peach,

I believe that somewhere, either on http://www.GaryNull.com, with srch words, 'lyme' or 'lyme arthritis''or';
on http://www.arthritistrust.org the proferred answer-- paraphrased-- was that normal gut micorganisms are needed for flagyl to work. After one's first flagyl regimen, AND w/o gut restoration of normal gut flora, subsequent flagyl regimens will not work---to the extent to which the normal gut flora have been 'upset'/destroyed by the first flagyl regimen.
I'd add previous abx regimens, as well.

Again this is a paraphrase of an M.D. on one of the above sites; other sites on which failure of flagyl for subsquent courses of flagyl 'might' be on:
http://www.roadback.org, and http://wwww.rheumatic.org

Best best bet to find this is on the first two sites.

I think an exorcist goes well with Flagyl. Can't say it is my favorite Rx.

I am currently on Flagyl, Ceftin and Zithromax.
This is only my first day on all three however, so I'm just waiting for the herx from h***.

I have to agree with beachcomber! Flagyl is a brutal medicine to take for more than a couple of days at a time.

It seems better to be on something more tolerable as a primary antibiotic, and throw a little flagyl at it occasionally... rather than the otherway around.

I was on it for 5 days and it just about made me into a vegetable by the 5th day. I could hardly speak legibly, let alone function. It really, REALLY felt good to finally stop and get the stuff flushed out of my system.

Sort of in the same way that pounding your thumbs with a hammer feels good when it stops. Rough stuff.

Is there any proof via studies which show that the other azoles are cyst busters like tini and flagyl?

The only thing I saw about not using doxy and flagyl together was from Dr B, and it only said that it may be a problem. That material is also from a couple of years ago. I don't think they really know for a fact whether there is or isn't some cancelation with combined usage.

I have also seen flagyl and doxy used in combo for other therapies, so I really don't know what to think. I know that I have seen posts from other people here who said that they were using them together.

To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield, Flagyl gives good headache.
