Annette,

Is there inflammation? If there is you may want to try and anti-inflammatory or plaquenil. Plaquenil is often used for people with RA. It's actually an anti-malarial, but for some reason reduces inflammation and joint pain.

Two days off of plaquenil and my hands and shoulders get stiff and painful/

We have a lot of pain issues with my son, though there getting slightly better.

We tried everything under the sun. He uses a duragesic patch 25 mg, and tramadol
occasionally, to help relieve the spiking pain.

If your doctor is willing, try various things until they help, but get them in small quantities so you don't spend a fortune, on drugs that don't help.

I know a lot of posters say Podi Patches help them as well. Or, maybe even the pain patches that Wal-Mart sells.

SAMe may help some. It has provided some mild reduction in the pain in my knees. I found a study on Pub Med showing it's as effective as NSAIDs like ibuprofen for Osteoarthritis. It's expensive, though, for an OTC medication, and it seems to require that you have a bare minimum of energy. I have a bad bronchial infection atm and had to stop taking it, cuz it made me shaky.

Still, I really think this one's underrated. It doesn't appear to have any immunosuppressive effect, there are a ton of studies attesting to safety and efficacy for joint pain and depression both, and it helps damaged livers regenerate.

This is not a solution of severe, intractable pain, and I'm not offering it as one - just something that has helped me some and might help others.
