I have had an elevated ASO (antibody titer to strep) for over a year now. I also just found out I am pos for Lyme. Doc wanted me to try doxy for lyme, but I want to try and treat strep incase I still have it w/amoxicilin. I have read it is effective against lyme too..is this true? I also read that it isnt the best choice. Waht do you think? Thanks.

Some people have had good success with amoxycillin. Although I took up to 6 grams a day (high doses to penetrate the blood/brain barrier are necessary) it didn't do much if anything for me.

My suggestion for you would be to find an LLMD ...lyme literate Dr...who will understand what your tests mean and will know how to treat lyme.

Most of us have found that relying on our regular docs doesn't get us well...a waste of time and $$$.

If you need a recommendation for an LLMD near you, go to the Seeking A Doctor forum here and post...be sure your email is available so people can contact you privately.

Good luck!

I am on amoxcillcian and just have reached 6 grams a day and am seen improvements. I am on probencid with it. The first month or so I was racked with severe fatique, and some neuro symptoms, but energy has increased and just had a good couple of weeks with much less symptoms.

Many do well on it.

Take Care

Don't worry too much about the strep, just about any of the antibiotic regimens for Lyme are overkill for strep also.

My doc doses by milligrams per Kg of body weight.

I took 4 grams of Amoxy per day for Lyme, and this dose is figured at about 60 to 80 mg per Kg of body weight. (I weight about 55Kg or 121 lbs)

If you do a search of the literature on Amoxy, you'll also find articles which show that this dose also kills susceptible pneumonia bacteria in the lung.

The lenghth of time your on this dose will be up to your Doc. During my Lyme therapy, I did pretty short courses, and rotated abx, with breaks inbetween.

I was on Amoxycillin as a secondary abx for a while. I took it with Biaxin, Levaquin and Ketek. We dropped it when my pancreatic enyzmes began to rise, just to reduce the load on my organs.

I'm much improved. I don't know if it was the Amoxy. We were also targetting salmonella in me.

No drug is really safe but regarding Amox it will most likely not going to hurt you. You may have problems with yeasts. This antibiotic is considered to be safe.

Amox honestly didn't do anything for me, and the Lyme progressed to a very serious stage while I used the wrong abx. Doxy isn't always the strongest abx, but it does hold the Lyme back from going totally out of control until you can assess all your options.

Don't know if ceftin or omnicef will work for Lyme, but they could be worth a shot.

I have just switched from Doxy to Amoxy and am for the first time noticing a real improvement!

Interested to know why some take probencid with Amoxy-

I'm on 3 grams/day so will look at raising this to get the critters out of my head-!

Thanks-

Sarah
