Is Lyme curable or once infected with Lyme do you always have it?

I've had a few people ask if Lyme can be cured and I don't have a good answer.

I've also had people tell me they had and are cured. They can't tell me what "medicine" they took or for how long and when I ask how they know they are cured...the doctor told them....

So, I'm looking for documentation that talks about whether or not Lyme is "curable".

Yes I would say it can be cured with persistance and the right combos at the right time and amounts of abx's.

Easier when caught early after that what I said above.

For a long time I wanted to ask you a one particular question.
Currently you have a remission or perhaps you are cured and you have used only oral treatment, as far as I understand.

Given that LD is always present in the brain how did you kill the bacteria present in your nervous system with oral medication alone?
Oral medication has mostly poor penetration to nervous tissue or is only bacteriostatic in nervous tissue.

Perhaps you never had neurosymptoms and it was not an issue in your case.

After being treated with both oral and IV antibiotics, my doctor re-tested me last week and said all titers were now negative. At the beginning, I tested very positive on I believe 7 bands.
He believes that I have been successfully (sp?) treated.
I am still going to see Dr D in Boston next Wednesday just to get his take on it too.

My take on it is this.

If caught within the first 30 days it is highly curable.

IF:

1)It is your first exposure.
2)Depending on the strain you have.
3)The Doctor used high enough doses and
combination of abx.
4)If the abx are able to penetrate the
Blood Brain Barrier

After the acute phase.....30 days to 6 Months....possibly.

Once it has reached Chronic or Persistant Lyme....more than likely never....requiring ongoing treatment.

Not sure I agree with that. There's a lot of people on here getting better after treating the co-infections and using the stronger abx, especially ketek.

Are you sure this line of reasoning is still backed up by people's experience?

Hi,

I have not posted in a long while.
Yes, I am 100% cured.
I had Lyme for at least 10 months untreated.

It took me a good part of a year to get well.

I am now well over 2 years off all abx.
I no longer feed the ducks, not even crumbs!
Please dont feed the Ducks, they will keep coming back for more.

I am in the better health today then before Lyme.

I will also write a new post soon.

Thanks for the post, you words were encouraging.

My 3 year old has had Lyme since June of last year and is still being treated.

I just tested positive and I think I was bit last year near the end of April so I'm hoping we caught both of ours early enough to have a "shorter" treatment period.

I haven't started treatment yet, but will be soon.

I first got lymes about 2 years ago. I took abx for about 4 months. I was told that I was cured but I don't know. Over the past 2 years I still get peroids of time that I feel that I have it again. I would like to know if others have had this problem as well. So I don't know if you are ever cured.

There is no good answer for your question. Likely you still have it, but if you want to know if you should treat it ... I don't know.

To be sure, you may do PCR - perhaps. It will proove presence of Bb in you body if you have it. Can be also false negative.

We need somebody who could invent a good test for this sickness.

I understand what you are saying...and, I can see why you say that.

However, the question was "CURED"...my answer pertains to the meaning of that word.

Yes...many are doing better.

But...the word cured is a strong word...and should be used with caution.

I beleive the word...remission is a more proper description when you have gone beyond the Acute Phase (first 30 days)

So...I re-iterate my above post.

(But.hey...I pray to God I'm overly pessimistic.

Hi, Trout.

What finally helped with this over the weekend, when I went wiggy over this subject and didn't know what to do next, was to start thinking of Lyme as a chronic managed condition, like diabetes, or even HIV. There are abx out there now that are good enough to restore quality of life--you just have to stay on them.

Sooner after finding acceptance on that score, Dr. F at Columbia emailed the name of an underground LLMD in New York City. We chatted on the phone, and he seemed like a sensible, smart guy, who said his goal is to cure people. If that worked out, it would be no different than going to the dentist every six months. Just pick up your abx, say hi, and go.

I basically agree with you.
I wish I could disagree.. but I really do agree.

I'll be happy if I can just live in harmony (no symptoms) with the bugs that I can't erradicate from my body.
