My doc wants me to take 400mg doxy a day. I am concerned after my pharmacist mentioned that is a very high dose. What are the risks w/taking this much? Is it safe? So far it just makes my vision blurry and me dizzy. Will it hurt my liver/kidneys etc at this dose?

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

That's really the recommended dosage for Lyme. I know some people have even managed to take 600mg. [sounds like too much to me!]

The "normal" DUCK prescription would be for 200mg a day. Won't do much for Lyme at that rate.

You're likely herxing...hence the dizziness and blurred vision. Have your LLMD check your liver/kidneys every 4 months at the least. [That would be recommended for any abx taken long term.]

At 200lbs (able to leap tall buildings) I try to take a minimum 400mg/day. I now take 100mg doses spread thruout every 24 hours and can usually tell by my symptoms that its time for more. I'm going to name my next child Doxy if I live that long. Woops time for another hit.

As with all medications, absorption is a big issue. It is possible because of stomach issues, you might get more or less than what is standard absorption rates. Because of this it might be ineffective or cause problems.

For me Doxy was showing in my blood at twice the level anticipated with a certain dossage, so I was cut back to 200mg from 400mg. There are other factors involved, including other medications you are taking along with foods you have eaten.

Even taking drugs like Prevacid, Acephix and Prilosec can cause issues. So there really is no simple answer.

I took 250mg 3 x a day drink plenty of water and stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible use sunblock strongest you can find.

Your probaly going to get a little sick in the stomach but after a week or so it should pass remember plenty of water when taking the pills.
Also dont take any of your vitamins or acidophils at the same time wait 2or 3 hours then take your probitics.

Suz,

Doxy will affect your eyes a lot. Read about the NOIR sunglasses using SEARCH feature in medical questions. They block UV, infra red, & blue light causing us to have too much 1.25 vitamin D.

Have your tv/pc as dark as possible unless your wear the NOIRs while watching.

Home should be as dark as possible. Wear long sleeves & long pants to cover the skin, neck, & even gloves while driving.

I'm on 200 doxy for 3 days; 2 off, then begin biaxin 1000/day for 3 days; 2 off; then doxy again. Been on this for 8 months plus 4 other meds for lyme.

Look out for the sun. I have been on doxi
500-600 a day for 18 months. The sun-
light burn me to a crisp in minutes.
I had was only on doxi for 3 days-
when i got my first Burn-- I have to
cover up complety cover up all skin.
Lite of any kind burns me- reflected-
or direct.
Sunscreen dose not seam to help at all.
Skin on face is getting ruined --
even my tonge has gotten sun burned.
I do not know if it effects every
one as bad as me. Be careful.
Do a goggle on --phototoxic--
The doxi has helped me - but mostly at
high dose. There is other side effects
but they are not anything as bad
as the light thing is for me.
Also it is very important to take dose
at correct time, I got a timer that beeps.
Brand name is medport--was hard to find
but it really helps cost $20
The doxi has helped me alot- I was sick a
long time before taking doxi-- there
are days I almost feel OK.
Not as often or long as I would like-
But I am getting there.
--Jay--

Betty, it is only one theory that people should keep their homes dark while being treated for Lyme disease. It is not the generally accepted protocol. VERY few Lyme doctors recommend you stay in the dark.

You do need to protect yourself from the sun when outdoors, as doxy will make your skin and eyes very sensitive to sun exposure. Sunscreen is often not enough, so it is best to cover up.
