Since I will be on vacation for two weeks next month, I will have to take one of my weekly bicillin shots with me. I will test keeping constant 40 degrees in a small cooler before I go, but am concerned about going through security at the airport as I will have to hand carry it rather than put it in checked luggage.
Any suggestions or experience with airline or airport security checks? I assume with my presrciption it would be all right, even if they question it, but.....

Depends where you're travelling to. A woman was recently thrown in jail for four years in Dubai because she was randomly urine tested and was found to have traces of a prescription painkiller in her urine. I guess that didn't go down well there.
I'm sure you'll be fine to most places, just carry a letter from you LLMD stating what the drug is and why you're taking it.

I believe there isn't a problem as long as you have the prescription with you (i.e. the label from the bicillin prescription). I took B-12 shots with me on a flight across the country and they didn't even ask me to take them out of my bag! Just put them through the x-ray machine and was on my way. Of course, the B-12 shots are sub-Q, not IM, so the needle is much shorter and that might make a difference. It's a good idea to call the airline ahead of time and you can probably check out the airport regulations online if your airport has a website.
I took bicillin injections with me twice on Jet Blue. I kept them in the box, witht he perscription on the front. It was so easy to do, that it almost made me feel uneasy. I would call your airline to confirm what their procedure is.
Do not forget to pack them with Ice packs.

Thought I would respond to your question and also ask how your doing?
I have flown on Southwest and because of a change in flight it turned out to be 2 seperate one way tickets. Southwest always pulls one way passengers aside and does the high security check. I just told them I had injectable prescription pain meds and syringes with me.
They really did not care, just looked in my carry on and purse like they were looking for something else.
I have heard of quite a few people who have flown with syringes (legal ones) including my diabetic daughter and I have not heard of anyone having trouble.
I know I havn't been on in a long time, How are you doing? sounds like you are on Bicillin, Do you see Dr.S now. I just went off Bicillin LA and have started on Rocephin again.
Did you know we moved? We now live on Angel Island, I should probably post and tell everyone whats been going on.
They are scheduling me for a pain pump in the next couple of weeks. I found a great pain clinic in San Francisco. Speaking of travel I will have to carry a card with me because the pump will make the alarm go off and its implanted under my skin.
I hope you are doing O.K., I know this a long journey for most of us, but we just have to keep hanging on.
Where are you going on vacation? I hope somewhere dry, I am getting a little tired of all this rain. Have fun!

I found out through much unfortunate experience, the way to get around this. It's worked for me since I've being following the procedure below.
One-way tickets throw a security alert with Southwest. You can't get your boarding pass online, etc. UNLESS you do the following. If you call SW and ask them to put your frequent flier number in the record, it will pull down the security alert flags. You have to ask them a couple of times during the conversation, because they don't even seem to understand this fact.
It's worked for me every time I've flown with a one-way ticket.

Hi Ann - I have traveled by airline several times with my bicillan.... you need to keep the bicillan in its original prescription package ...Also if you want to keep it cool you can get a small cooling pack to put it in in your carry on. I have never had a problam and I travel with TONS of meds and needles.. As long as they are in the original precription bottle it is fine. Good Luck.
