My dr prescribed 100mg of doxy 2x per day, even though Dr. Harris said 200mg 2-3x pesr day.
I know my dr is concerned about starting slow so that I don't go into shock.
BUT is this dose too low?? From what I read it may not be enough! Does anyone have any thoughts??
Many thanks.

My son, Jordan, took 100 mg of doxy twice a day for quite a while shortly after being diagnosed. This was later combined with Biaxin. Be careful, though, with doxycycline in the summer as it can cause really horrible sunburns. Your doctor may be wanting to start out slowly and build the dosage up as he/she sees how you are tolerating it.

You have one and only one chance to treat Lyme early. Do you want to join our group? Don't mess with too low a dose.
By Dr. Harris-do you mean Dr. Nick Harris of Igenex? He is very Lyme literate.
Doxy precautions- Have food in the stomach Take with a full glass of liquid Don't lie down for 30 minutes Watch out for sunburns Take probiotics 2 hrs away from doxy
I took doxy 600 mg/ day, I didn't go into shock.
I repeat, you have ONE AND ONLY ONE chance to treat this early where there is a good chance of success-don't mess with the Lyme bacterium.

The first 2 weeks of doxy my stomach had to adjust to it. I started with 100 mg twice a day. After that I was able to double up.
Maybe in a week if you are tolerating it well he will agree for your increasing.
Is this doctor lyme literate?

Hi 123 200mg of doxi is called the standard dose. It will kill many types of germs--Lyme is not one of them. My doc put me on this dose --and I did have a slight improvement after about 3 months for a week or 2. On my own I increased to 600mg a day. After about a month I did have a large improvment. From my experance I feel 200mg is not enough. I wish I had started at 500 to 600mg a day. I think at the low dose the lyme germs mutate and the doxi is not effictive. Doxi can make some people very sencitive to light. Be very careful. The burns you can get can be very serious. Do a goggle search on photo toxic. One thing I did find out is that citrus -Lemons -Limes- oranges ect can make you Much more sencitive to Light while taking doxi. I used to drink about a gallon of lemonade a day. I would get blistered in 15 minutes of sun exposure. I was light sencitive even on a low dose of doxi. The other side effects from doxi where mild for me--Jay--

My doc is just concerned for me. He knows I haven't taken any type of meds for over 10 years, including asprin...Personally, I take no offence to concern, but would like to do the right thing. I do mean Dr. Harris of IgeneX.
I thought doxy can kill Lyme...Does it just depend on the dose?? Thanks- SAK

For now short term heavy doses of doxy is nothing compared to where you could be heading.
Many, many of us started in the early stages with 100 2x daily and went chronic in just months.
I started your dosage in July 99 early stages and have been through hell and back. If only I knew then what I know now, maybe just maybe I could of prevented those days, months and years of horrible illness.
Please don't start slow & low with abx and be in this same support group for years.
My husband came down with lyme symptoms last summer and we hit it with 1000mg Biaxin for 6 weeks and he has been fine since. But I also treated him with my rife machine, so he got a double whammy on killing it.
Take care, Pam

Thanks for your input Pam. I really appreciate.
I'm so sorry you went through rough times and I hope you feel better now.
What would you do differently? Could you have felt better earlier?
Take good care -

ssaak, I would of done 600 mg doxy. Then if every symptom wasn't gone, I would switch to another abx high doses.
I did abx for about 6 weeks, then the doc ran more test and found I had Epstein Barr Virus, so he thought his lyme dx was wrong. I was off abx for 3 months and then I had 40 symptoms of lyme disease. Chronic within 5 months.
Today I'm much better, but that's a whole another story and thousands and thousands of dollars paid out of my pocket for alternative treatment in the last 2 yrs.
I'll never know what might have been.
Take care, Pam

Go with the advice Dr Harris was good enough to give you. Your local doc is not well informed about Lyme. Go to another, and then another doctor if you need to. NO ONE else will do this for you. You must be proactive.
Also, while on 400-600 mg/day of doxy you need to make an appt ASAP to see an LLMD and be checked for co-infections.
Go to support groups at the left , find one in your area, contact them tomorrow and be on the phone Monday morning to get an LLMD appt.

Thanks for all the replies. You are all really wonderful & tremendously helpful! My head has been spinning since I found out I had Lyme...
I have an appt with an LLMD, but until then (unfortunately months away) I'm starting up with doxy while I also wait for results of my other tests.
Best, SAK

If 10 years, 100mg could give a severe herx, esp. if it is brand.
After 6- 10 days infected, after having snapped the tick, my doc px'd 250mg. as loading dose, and I had a severe herx, and not just the increased head pressure(intracranial blood pressure, doxy is known to cause). So, imo, this is a sagacious doc.

Hi 123 Your docs concern about taking ABX - low dose -start slow-- could make it so you are taking --Large doses of abx --for ever--like me--Jay--
