In my opinion, yes, LD can be dormant. I was bitten a bunch of times as a kid--but I think my immune system fought it off. It wasn't until I had my babies that my body just fell apart. I got hashimotos thyroiditis and active ebstein barr. I just thought i was going to go into a coma.
My doc thinks that after you get bitten over and over and over your body just succomes to the bacteria.

Please get the Lyme test, that usually results in false negatives, through a LLMD who knows that a negative test should be evaluated in the context of symptoms etc.
b
In fact, your immune system canharbour it in the synovial fluid of ...your left knee, until one day you land on it and ...boom, out comes the Lyme.

I'm so sorry you're facing these challenges. It takes a lot of energy and we have to be our own advocate and each others advocates. This is a great place to get the info and support needed in a situation like yours.
If there is a possibility of MS then there is a very strong possibility of Lyme. Good news.....there IS treatment for the cause of Lyme! With MS, there is no definitive test or known cause. The only treatment is treatment of symptoms for. MS is a cluster of symptoms which could better be called a syndrome.
I was not faced with your dilemma but I will take a diagnosis of Lyme over MS......just because there is treatment for a cause with Lyme.
Yes, Lyme can be dormant and as the others have said can be kept at bay by the immune system for many many rears. It was true in my case. That's what makes a diagnosis so misleading. Often the tick bite or bites are long forgotten. Life goes on and out of the blue, bang....strange and unrelated symptoms start to crop up. Or for some of us.....the symptoms crept up on us gradually. Bottom line....there are lots of different presentations for Lyme.
My only concern in reading your post is, who is doing the Lyme testing, what lab???. It's important to be completely evaluated by an LLMD (Lyme Literate MD). Lyme is first and foremost a clinical diagnosis. That's why I said if presenting as possible "MS".....there is a strong possibility of Lyme.

Nancy
My Lyme was sort of dormant for about 20 yrs then I was dxd with Fibromyalgia 25yrs ago....then Interstitial Cystitis, then finally discovered it was Lyme 4 1/2 yrs ago, over 45 yrs since I got my first tick bites.
So by that time, it had really ruined my life. Get proper testing NOW!

This is good for anyone to watch, and can be suggested that doctors watch to learn about lyme.
Tina
I got mine in Virginia too (and/or Pennsylvania). Had a short case of classic first-stage Lyme (without the bullseye though), got over it in spite of insufficient treatment... then 3 years later, neuro symptoms.
It took me over a year to get to a doctor who would treat me. That's before I found Lymenet.
Go get yourself to a LLMD, and get treated - now. No time to mess around with doubts and misdiagnoses. We call that the Duck Carousel - and it's better just to never get on it. Someone else may want to explain that term! (I wrote a long piece a while ago about this, but it fell off- it was post #011064 and the earliest post now is #020512!)
Good luck.

WELCOME To LYMENET
Here's more goodys! A typical response to newcomers.
Hi and WELCOME! Get a LLMD or at least Dr that is willing to learn about lyme. "Lyme literacy" means, first and
foremost, knowing how to diagnose the disease accurately. Borrelia Burgdorferi is a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms and on your response to treatment. Good Luck, bumpy road ahead.

You bet! I too was eaten alive by ticks as a kid. We lived next to a defunct farm that was loaded with them. I also had a great big bullseye 15 years ago that was dismissed as a black fly bite by an MD who was cranky that I had called him on a Saturday. I was ok for quite awhile. I attribute that to exercise, youth and a good spirit. As time went on I started putting on wieght and basically hitting middle age where everything gets a little screwy. Wham! I tested very positive for full-blown late stage Lyme. Don't wait to be tested and treated. I waited too long. All the signs were there: arthritis, tendonitis, pneumonia 3 times, fatigue, brain fog, allergies, etc.
