My mom (who I suspect has Lyme Disease) has had bouts of chronic burning Urethritis and has not found any relieve from various antibiotics, change in diet, suppositories, etc..

Has anyone else ever had this as a result of Lyme and if so, what if anything, made the burning stop. Alternative treatments preferred...but any advice is welcome!

Definition Return to top

Urethritis is an inflammation (irritation with presence of extra immune cells) of the urethra.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top

Urethritis may be caused by the same organisms that cause urinary tract infections (E. coli or klebsiella) and by some sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, and Ureaplasma urealyticum infections). Viral causes of urethritis include herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus. Urethritis may also develop because of a chemical irritatant, such as spermacide in condoms or contraceptive jelly, cream, or foam. Trauma may also cause urethritis.

Men between the ages of 20 and 35, those with multiple sexual partners, and those who engage in high-risk sexual behavior (such anal sex without a condom) are at higher risk.

Young women in their reproductive years are also at risk. In women, common bacterial causes include gonorrhea, chlamydia, mycoplasma hominis, ureaplasma urealyticum, and mycoplasma genitalum. Risk factors include youth (younger than 20), multiple partners, and a prior history of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).

Hmm - since my mom is in her 60's and has been married to the same guy forever...I'm thinking that her diagnosis might be off from her urologist. Thanks for the information!

Char-

I used to have similar symptoms, not a bacterial infecttion or anything sexual transmitted. I had frequent vaginal yeast infections too.

After I started abx for lyme and went on a low carb diet with probiotics for yeast the burning and itching went a away. So did the yeast infections.

My guess is that I had systemic yeast and the yeast management for lyme did the trick.

I take oil of oregano for a few days if I cheat on the carbs.

Go figure. I hope it is this simple for your mom.
