Anyone know where to get either of these anti-malarial (Babesia's cousin) drugs?

Coartem is the trade name used (b-artemether)
used by the manufacturer, and it's sold really cheaply to the poorest of the 3rd world countries for Malaria.

Riamet (b-artemeher mixed with abx) you can get by prescription in Europe.

But US Dr.s won't write a scrip. for a european or drug that's not FDA approved and marketed in the USA.

So you'll have to be creative.

Barb, Thanks for the reply. I have a good friend in Peru (gov gives out malaria tx free) and Coartem is not yet available there. Not available in Mexico either.

I am hoping someone reads this thread who has taken riamet.

I remember someone posted the protocol and I think they had used it twice......a month or so apart.

If you have used it......can you tell us of success.

By the way, Janet, your doctor was great today at Hope to Heal....I would travel to see him, indeed!

I took a course of pure beta-artemether, one of the ingredients in RIAMET. This is a synthetic derivative of artesminin, but NOT the same molecule. Please not that a tiny change in a drug molecule may - or may not - make a very very big difference in its effects.

I did not have a rapid response to it, but no antimicrobial has given me a rapid response (except fluconazole). Yet I have very gradually improved about 70% over many months.

The fact is, I probably dont have babesiosis anyway. I decided to treat for it nonetheless. I had an equivocal WB for it and a negative FISH, both from IGeneX.

The safety and efficacy of RIAMET is good in uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria according to the 2 clinical trials I read, but this does not necessarily imply that it is safe and effective for babesioses caused by microti, WA-1, etc, which may have important biological differenes from P. falciparum and from one another.

Last January I obtained Riamet from Meds4YourHealth.com. The Riamet came from Switzerland with a Swiss doctor's prescription.

However, they may not carry it any longer. Under "Malaria" they list Riamet but when you click on it, it says "No listings in this category".

You could try emailing them from their website and asking them if they have it.
