My Gp has prescribed biaxin & plaquenil twice a day for 30 days to address recurring lyme symtoms. I'm seeing an LLMD in one week and wonder if he will continue treatment or change the meds. What is the recommended course for recurring symtoms?

Rich,

That is a combo I've used in the past. Placquenil can cause eye problems so be very aware of that. The llmd will probably stay that course but will want you to see an opthamologist to make sure you have no eye problems.

Biaxin by itself has helped me tremendously but everyone is different. Good luck.

I recently swithced to P&B. I expect to take it for 4 - 5 months before switching back to tetracycline.

I happen to know a leading eye specialist and asked him about eye problems. He said Plaquenil only causes eye problems when taken for a very long time. He said most problems were seen in elderly missionaries who had been taking it for most of their adult lives.

Last week I saw another top eye specialist for follow up on an old matter. I asked him abour Plaquenil and he said not to expect any problems unless I take it for a long time like 8 years!

I'm doing really well on this combo. I have more energy & less side effects than before.

I'm taking B& P right now. I'm on my 7th week. Not sure how long I've had lyme...years. Just recently diagnosed and will be on this for the first three months until I see my LLMD again in July...maybe for 6 find out more then with regards to continuing or changing meds. I'm still waiting for that energy....just a couple good days would be nice. These last two weeks it seems like all the symptoms I've had in the past are coming all at once...ear pain, heart skipping, screaming headaches at 3a.m., an arm I'd like to cut off and I feel like crap. Does that mean the B and P are working....is this what a herx is all about? Waiting for a better day.

sometimes doxycicline or minocycline is an added part of that combination
Ive been alternately on biaxin/plaq ,biaxin /doxy plaq or biaxin /mino/plaq
1 month isnt enough for long term lyme. treatment needs to be for many months if a new infection and sometimes if its an old infection, years

There are many different possible combinations of treatment an LLMD might put you on. It depends on your symptoms and medical history.

Plaquenil can cause eye problems, resulting in reduced peripheral vision. It's recommended that you get a field of vision test from an eye doctor at the start of taking plaquenil, and then again every 6 months. That will catch any damage early enough to not cause any noticeable vision problems.

My LLMD just put me on Plaquenil this weekend to augment the Ketek and Cedax.

Very small dose. He said that eye problems were a side effect, but my dosage is so low he did not anticipate a problem.
