I would like to know what you guys feel is the best probiotic out there. I have always tried to use good ones and am currently using Jarro Brand. Sometimes I wonder if it is working though. I have had some batches that smell odd too. I've done the test on one batch, to grow bacteria and make yogurt and nothing happened.

The stuff is dern expensive and I don't want to pay for something that isn't consistently excellent.

Primadophilus Bifidus and Primal Defense, right now.

I tried the Jarrow brand and wasn't overly impresssed, either. Shame too, because I tend to like Jarrow's stuff.

I use the Jarrow + FOS, it seems to work for me and costs less than some of the others. (Which is why I started using it in the first place.)

I too have had a batch that smelled and tasted funny, sort of cardboard-like. I called them and they were very nice. They told me to take it back to the store and tell them to send it back to them and refund my money.

They also said they hadn't had any problems, that they knew of, with that particular batch but want to test it and see what was wrong.

They told me what codes and product sizes would be from the same lot and told me what letters/numbers to look for if I wanted to try a different batch.

You should give them a call, if it's questionable, they'll make good. (The bottle I returned was nearly half used and it wasn't a problem.) It IS expensive and you shouldn't have to take the hit.

Metagenix Ultra Flora Plus is about the best I have used. But, it is VERY expensive. It must be kept refrigerated.

Natren......do a search on the web and see their site. We spent thousands of bucks over the years on probiotics.....this one delivers.

Since the friendly bacteria is one of the body's major defenses against all forms of assault......a good probiotic will actually fend off many symptoms over and above gut problems.

Try it, you'll like it!!

I have come across a new company....Safer Medical and they have a probiotic called Prescript Assist. It will be ready for marketing next month. Up until now mostly doctors have been using it with their patients who are taking antibiotics, who have Crohns, IBS, Diverticulitis, etc. and this product is putting them into remission. For an article discussing this product, please see http://safermedical.us/custom.aspx?id=1

If anyone has any more questions on how to obtain it, please write to me.

You know a test to see if they work??? I'd love to know about this culture test. Could you please post that information.

I take Natren Healthy Trinity, Jarrowdophilus, Jarrow Sacchrymces, Jarrobifidus, primal defense, and when traveling room T stabilized jarrow acidophilus and culturelle.

I have horrific yeast and none of them seem to work.

Gotta post this here....I bought Primal Defense [90 caps] and PB8 [120 capsules] today from Vitacost [online]. I was delightfully shocked at the price!

BOTH of them together cost me $42.17 and that includes shipping! I have NEVER bought them this cheaply before!

Vitacost, where have you been all my Lyme-life??

I use and like the following probiotics--I alternate brands to keep inspiring the bugs: Primal defense, Jarrow's Prodophilus and their Sacchromyces Boulardii (SB of one brand or another has been an absolutely essential staple of our probiotic regimen), All-Flora, and Rich's Enzymes (probiotics and digestive enzymes). Primal defense has some iron in it, which I like because of the babesia iron-depletion problem. But normally I'm very wary of any amount of iron as a supplement.

I use the Rich's Enzymes all the time -- I found the digestive enzymes really helped, more than just probiotics alone.

For me, freeze dried garlic and oregano oil have been essential for yeast control, along with the probiotics. I've used Dr. Zhang's freeze-dried garlic and the Pharmanax brand, which were great when the yeast was very bad.

I've also used Kyolic -- theoretically, I guess it's not supposed to work as well, but once I got my major yeast problems under control with the freeze-dried garlic (with a short course of nystatin and diflucan) I started using the Kyolic to finish up the bottles I had, along with the oregano oil. So far several months later, no yeast problems. But when I've finished the Kyolic I'll go to Garlinase.

I also use a lot of fresh garlic.

The TEST.....It was really very simple if I remember right. You just open a capsule and pour it into 1 cup of milk. Mix it up and let it sit at room temp for 12-24 hrs. It should turn into yogurt if it is a probiotic containing live organisms. Now if you are talking about Primal Defense which comes in a hard tablet, I am not sure. I know that others did test Primal Defense, maybe they crushed it up first.

Looks like a lot of people really like Primal Defense. It was the very frist probiotic I ever used after reading the book, "Patient Heal Thyself', by the maker of Primal Defense. A REALLY good book. Maybe I will return to the soil organisms. Thanks for all of your input.

hi all,
while we are talking about probiotics....when do you take yours? with meal, after, before? please be specific. i have heard conflicting stories. thanks.

electric

Posted by kgg (Member # 5867) on :

Electric, it depends on the antibiotic schedule. If I am not using an antibiotic or not using one that should be taken with meals, then I take my probiotics with meals. They supposedly help with digestion.

But if I am taking an antibiotic with meals then I wait two-three hours after I have eaten to take the probiotic.

And then I definately take some before I go to bed. That way they have all night before I insult them with more antibiotics.

Hope this makes sense.

I take Kyo-Dophilus. It has 1.5 billion cells per capsule. It also doesn't need to be refrigerated so you can take it with you if you're travelling somewhere.

It contains L.Acidophilus,B.Bifidum,and B.Longum. It's manufactured by Wakunaga Of America Co..

Probiotics should be taken with a full glass of water one hour before a meal (told this by a nutritionist/RN who teaches at a university).

This makes "common sense" if you think about it.

The full glass of water dilutes the stomach acids (very acidic) so they don't destroy the beneficial bacteria you are trying to get into your system.

Once they reach the bowel (in an hour), you want to "feed them".

Stomach acids break down the food to supply the nutrients to the beneficial bacteria and to us. In turn, the beneficial bacteria MAKE many nutrients for us also.

If you have been on abx. and have not done probiotics, loading doses may be needed.

My son took 5 capsules of Essential Formulas brand with a full glass of water one hour prior to breakfast and same ahead of dinner for 6 days. Then we switched to Primal Defense and did the same for another week. I even added in some infant probiotics (powder, refrig.) mixed in juice to try to cover as many "bases" as possible.

If you look closely at the bottles and compare them...they contains some of the same, some different, bacteria (the good ones). This is why we varied the sources...to provide as many kinds of beneficial bacteria as possible.

I take Klaire Labs, "Ther-Biotic Complete". It's great. It's semi-expensive but since I'm taking mega oral abx, and it keeps me from having the "green-apple-quickstep" I don't care.

Something I haven't seen mentioned is that ANY GOOD probiotic must be refrigerated. If you don't have to refrigerate it, you can be pretty sure it's just so much junk. And if it's sitting on the shelf at the local health-food store ....... well .......... just so much junk. If it's dead, any amount you pay is too much.

I keep a bottle of the Klaire Labs probiotic in the fridge at work and one in the fridge at home. If I didn't have a fridge at work or when I have to be out of the office, I take a couple of capsules, wrapped in Glad Wrap, in a baggie with a cold pack.

I take it at least 2 hours after I take my antibiotics and before bed.

Mainly, be sure that whatever you take, has been refrigerated and stays that way until you take it.

Happy BM's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Today I was at the health food store looking at P8 which Lymetoo uses. It was not in the cooler. When I asked, the salesclerk(who is very knowledgeable about nutrition etc) said she called several companies and each one said that most probiotics do not need to be refrigerated now. If they sit on the shelf for one month they lose about 3% of their effectiveness versus 1% if they are refrigerated. I still plan to put mine in the refrigerator.
