So my doctor is telling me that the only way to have sex now is to use condom, never touch each others genitals and kiss only after rinsing mouth with hydrogen peroxide. What are the other doctors telling you folks about it?
Posted by janet thomas (Member # 7122) on :
I've been wondering about that. Especially oral sex and kissing.

Where is TAOS?

There is no proof that lyme is sexually transmitted...to my knowledge to date...
Personally my wife did'nt get it....
It is a spirochete as syphilis is so perhaps it can be transmitted...
if you're taking abx for lyme you may transmit a fungal yeast type of thing...
pay your money and take your chances!

My dr. (duck) says nothing.
I've told my boyfriend about it and we use condoms (I wouldn't go without them anyway even without Lyme) but he trusts his immune system to take care of any keets that reach him during other activities. In my case, I feel it was his decision. If he wanted to protect himself better it would be fine by me.

By the way I don't see why touching genitals would be risky. Oral, yes, but touching? Just wash your hands after, and make sure there are no cuts or anything on your hands... And of course don't touch yourself while you're at it, wash your hands before you switch to a different person. Should be completely safe, right?

TAOS is in New Mexico ..... North of Santa Fe. One of the most beautiful places on earth!
Veruska, You did not get Lyme in NM did you? I lived there for 18 years..... hiked camped....never saw a tick. Came t Va and was bit within the first few months.
As far as the sex issue......... depends which doc you ask. Some LLMD's say it is safe other's say no. I have heard both replies at conferences and presentations by LLMDS.

lymes?

Bb can almost be considered "normal flora". Millions of us carry it and most are asymptomatic. I gave it to my wife and she was running marathons at the time. It is passed vertical and horizontal. Vet research, similarities with Syphilis, and tons of other research has imo proven this. Lyme is a zoonotic disease by a more virulent form of Bb.
For good info search Lyme and Dr Harvey. He does a good job of crushing the CDC's indefensable position on this.

My doc said hubby gave this to me--doc believes it can be sexually transmitted...(I think I had one kind or another since i was a kid--but hubby and I probably swapped stuff)...
Heard through the grape vine that THE old boyfriend had a hard time a few years back and was very ill and treated for--*surprise*--Lyme disease...
So, maybe I gave it to him or he gave it to me--but I think you can give it to each other...
Sorry, L

Sorry, L
I think it's only male to female but I'm by no means certain.(at the very least it's easier that way) I did find a trial in which rats did in fact commit horizontal transmission. AFAIK no other trials are being done?!?

Hi,
I have been wondering about this issue too and how to deal with it.
Is this permanent or only while the infection is active?

Welcome fellow New Mexican! Who's the doc--initals only please, would be interested who is treating you.

You don't know what you're talking about.

It seems logical that at some point during treatment the Bb in sperm will drop to zero. But it just takes a little bit to infect someone so it's kind of risky. I wonder if some people still go for it but just have the other non-infected spouse take doxy or whatever.
There are still very likely many more pathogens out there that haven't even been discovered. They didn't discover HHV6 until the late 80's, for example.

I think any kind of good sex involves some risks. I mean, my boyfriend and me have both been tested for STDs. But what about cheating? What about false negatives in STD testing? What about diseases they don't test for? What about condoms that rip?
Yeah, you could wrap a condom around everything, but some diseases you can get from just kissing... Sharing a bed or a towel... I for one am not going to quit having sex or wrap myself in rubber top to bottom. I try to minimise the risks, but accept there will always be risks one way or the other.

I can't wait until the day when this issue of sexual transmission is no longer a debate.
I strongly feel it is sexually transmitted...why wouldn't it be?
It is a spirochete - related to syphilis - Acts like syphilis - affects those infected as syphilis does...why is it such a huge leap of faith for many to believe that it sexually transmitted???
Just hoping to hear from those that posted here that humans are a dead end host how they have come to this conclusion...I know the CDC makes this claim - but where is the research to back it up?

if there is lyme bacteria in the semen it can be sexually transmited, actually it can be transmitted thru any mucous membrane. the thing is it doesn't take many bb to cause lyme and may not even be in some fluids unless you have a high titer of bacteria. oral sex with yeast is out, gave wife vagina yeast was not happy. use a rubber dam if need be, or just behave and don't do it, nah!!!!!
Posted by mlkeen (Member # 1260) on :
Thanks Dave for jumping in on this!
Abx kills lyme fairly easily in fluids, it is the keets deep in tissue that are hard to get.
So Dave, this is my logic, is it close? For a couple of long term abx users 1yr+ the risk of transmission by fluid would be low for two reasons, few keets in fluids and abx in blood of partner. Now this is the part that becomes tricky. When one partner becomes well and goes off abx, THEN condoms become a must in my eyes. Only when both partners have been symptom free for a long period can condom free sex be an option. If one re-lapses both need to be treated again and use the same procautions.
Your thoughts?

you can probably get away with spemicidal agents. it will probably kill anything, if it kills sperm cells,i would think it would kill bateria.sex is much more pleasant this way also, becaus eit also lubricates , with lyme sometimes tends to be missing. i think even though you can get it through any mucous membrane the chances of catching it from a partner is much less than if they actually got bit. With people with the aids viruses it to can pass mucous membranes, but is almost impossible to get it from kissing or saliva.

I am with hiker, what is sex?
MY LLMD Dr. S in SF has done a lot of research about this, plus over time you meet so many couples that both have lyme. Seems so logical that if you have it in your blood, organs, brain and everywhere else the keets would like to move from one person to another.
However, being a single gal when I got diagnosed...the "hey I have a syphillis like disease and get a penicillin shot everyweek" pick-up line just does not work like I would think. Not to mention my lyme brain would lose their phone numbers anyway.
