If one travels to a malaria endemic area the CDC advises to take chemoprophylaxis.

One such protocol is below-

To prevent malaria, doxycycline is taken 1 to 2 days prior to travel to an area where malaria is present, daily while in the area, and daily for 4 weeks after departure from the area.

My thought-if traveling to a Lyme endemic area (or living in one) perhaps the same advise would be sound.

This is rather a rhetorical question.........

First considering that only the northeastern states are deemed "endemic" how do you get some doctor in Florida or southwestern state to even admit there is lyme disease......

WE KNOW IT"S a world wide problem but the ducks don't.......so they're not likely to subscribe an abx for a disease they don't recognize as existing............zman

What I always find confusing is the last time I looked 'endemic' even by CDC standards is only 2 cases.

There is also HIV prophylaxis.

If you are stuck by a needle you are automatically put on HIV drugs, even if you are not HIV positive.

You are also treated with antibiotics prophylaxis if you have HIV. Not because HIV can be cured by the drugs, but you MIGHT get a bacterial infection.

The new book Healing Lyme gives a prevention protocol. Have no idea if it would work, but I have abandoned antibiotics for hubby for now and am trying the herbal route. Will add back antibiotics in 2 - 6 weeks after he gets up to a reasonable dose on herbs.

It was time to try something radical.

Good points!
Ticks carry so many freaking pathogens and now blackflies have stuff...

doxy covers the most at the cheapest cost with least long term side effects...
sunburn is a problem. ticks seem to be more plentiful in sunnier months.

I think the idea of prophylaxis is a good one if you are hiking and camping and want to have a life after lyme disease!

What we need is an easy home kit to tell if you got it no question and a CURE if ya do!

Well, what would you prophylax against? Lyme, babesia, bartonella? I see some problems here.

Am wondering if they are making any progress on the anti-tick vaccines. Maybe this is a better way to go eventually. Ticks have an awful lot of different germs.
