Anyone have a good remedy for a headache that does not include a narcotic or Rx.

Marnie will probably back me up on this one:

I have found that taking regular doses (for me, 400mg a day) of magnesium has lessened the frequency and duration of migraine headaches.

I'll take extra when I feel a headache coming on, but it's a great preventative as well.

Not sure about other types, though, but magnesium is very good for you, so it shouldn't hurt....

Here is a remedy I read about on another health board.

Fill the kitchen sink with hot water.
Immerse your forearms in the water. (5-10 min.?)

This dilates (relaxes) the blood vessels in the arms, and the vessels in the head should contract, reducing the headache.

1. Remove head from neck.

2. Lift off top of skull.

3. Extract brain, place in clean colander.

4. Rinse brain and skull thoroughly with lukewarm water (cold water will intensify the headache).

5. Allow brain and skull to dry thoroughly before replacing. You may pat them dry with a clean dishtowel if desired.

Repeat as needed.

But seriously -- I've found that those microwavable heatpacks on my sinuses and at the back of my head help. I have one friend who doesn't have LD but does have migraines who swears by acupuncture. The only other stuff that's worked for me short term is narcotics or Rx.

I take flushing niacin...it dilates the blood vessels...not for the weak at heart...can be very painful, but it helps AFTER your vessels dilate..they relax..it is wondeful.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to go with Minoucat's recipe and also add magnesium. My headaches are ongoing and not of the migraine type.

If your headaches are the "Tension Headache" type (feels like throbbing band around you're head), I have found that an ice pack at the base of the neck helps.
