My son has been on rocephin since july 15th. He woke up this tuesday complaining of pain in his stomach near his ribs and it woke him up it hurt so bad. Dr. J requested he have a gall bladder ultr sound now and again in 30 days.
dr j has extended his rocephin another month. Austin woke me again this morning complaining of the same pain as he had on tuesday.

I did some reading on rocephin and the gall bladder and I am thinking that this is his problem. Any suggestions???

Some patients who use Rocephin also take Actigall to protect the GB. I don't know if it can be given to children.

You could try milk thistle, but it sounds like the Roc is the culprit and I don't know if you can counter that with just some milk thistle.

There was a thread about a week ago on the GB and Rocephin. You might be able to find it by going to the bottom of this page and clicking on the numbers. It may be on page 2 or 3 [at least].

Hope your son's pain subsides soon! I've "been there!"

Well I spoke with Dr J office today and the nurse spoke to him. Dr J said on monday when he has his ultrsound to tell them he needs a wet read.

So I will let you all know what he says on monday. thanks for your help I am going to look up the actigall see if austin can take that.

Well austin again had pains but it was while he was getting his rocephin. He was lying down gettin the iv and all of a sudden started screaming and crying with the pains.

For some reason when i give him the milk it works, I am confused.

just regular milk in a cup he drinks it when it happens and the pains go away

Sorry your son is having these pains. If it is his gallbladder, I can empathize. I lost my GB after 4 months of Rocephin.

This may seem like a weird question, but is the milk you give him whole milk or low fat? If it's his gallbladder, whole milk should make it worse because of the fat. I wonder if it's an ulcer or something like that because I believe milk is supposed to help that.

Let us know how the ultrasound goes!

We drink 2% milk. I never thought of it being a ulcer. He is only 9 can he get an ulcer and how would of that happend

I can relate also....I am 19 yrs old...was on rocephin 16 days and i had to get my gallbladder taken out...this all happened last monday on aug.1st, i resumed treatment on aug 2nd and i havent had any problems at all.

i felt the surgery was worth it cause rocephin helps me a lot...i hope all goes well with your son, i can relate to the pain...man does it hurt so badly.

i would rather have my gallbladder out rather then stopping treatment and going on a diff. med...

Thank you for your info and experiences. I definitely think that it is his gall bladder. He woke me again at 5am with the pains. He went down stairs drank some milk and felt better.

Tomorrow we should know something.

Well austins ultra sound showed sludge in the gall bladder. Dr J office called and the rocephin is being stopped.

He is changing it to CLAFORAN IV 2grms 2x a day and he is to have another ultrasound in 30 days and labs have to be done once a week. So they can keep an eye on his white blood cell levels.

His diet also has to be low fat. Austin is not happy about that. So I told him we will all start eating that way and you won't be the only one

Austins family Doc has gotten me upset and I need to vent. Dr. J office called and said since austin has not taken CLAFORAN before that it would need to be administered by someone other than myself just in case he has an allergic reaction to it.

Dr J office called the nursing co to see if a nurse can come administer his first dose and monitor him. They don't do that. So they told Dr J office to call the hospital austin was in the hospital said his doctor would have to have rights to their hospital. Well Dr J doesnt and neither does austins fam doc.

So Dr J office called austin family doc and discussed this with him. Said he would see what he could do they faxed austin fam doc all the paper work regarding the new meds and the ultra sound report etc. So I called austins family doc to see how it was going to work. So he just called me back and said he was going to talk all this over with the orignal inf dis doc I was going to take austin to and another inf ped doc at a hosp that he works in.

He commented even though Dr. J has treated over 8,000 patients he does not agree with austin staying on meds any longer. He said that the protocol for it is 14-28 days and thats it. He says austin will be fine. He says even though austin is still showing a few signs doesn't mean to prolong his meds another month and add zithromax as well.

I don;t know what to think or what to do. I am so angry right now

WOW, I am so sorry about Austin. Poor little guy!! IMO those ID Ducks don't know anything about Lyme, End of story. Stay with what Dr. J is telling you, he is the BEST!!

IF he still has symptoms he will NOT be alright, he will just keep getting worse and maybe have permanant damage. Now this is just my opinion, I am not a doctor. I am

just the mother of a 24 year old that got Lyme at 10 and was misdiagnosed for 14 years and is suffering horribly now. Sent from one duck to another and never could make her

any better. Obvously these ducks don't know what they are doing so why are they putting down the LLMD's? I get it, but I really have a hard time with it. Good luck and I hope you stay with what Dr. J is telling you.

Milk is the worst thing you can give a person with ulcers. I doubt he has ulcers, if he is on IV meds they don't go into the gut. Sounds gallbladderish to me.

Well austin went to dr j yesturday and they administered his first dose of the new abx. He did fine no allergic reaction.

His family doc called me yesturday before I left for Dr j office. He just wanted to explain why he feels the way he does. All in all he is talking to the wrong docs. He said but your austins mom and you do what you feel is best for him.

He also suggested that I go to see the Infectious disease doc on friday and if I didn't like what she had to say than not to go back to her.
