(benadryl) does that on its own to some people.

From there site

Q. Does Benadryl contain PPA?
A. No. Benadryl does not contain PPA (Phenylpropanolamine). No Pfizer or Warner Lambert Consumer Healthcare upper respiratory products in the United States contain PPA.

Q. What is the shelf-life of Benadryl?
A. Benadryl is good for two years from date of manufacture. Each carton is stamped with an expiration date. Consumers should check the expiration date on their package to determine if the product is still usable.

Q. What is Phenylalanine?
A. Phenylalanine is a naturally occurring amino acid contained in aspartame, an artificial sweetener. There is a standard label warning for this ingredient because some people may not be able to tolerate phenylalanine and must be made aware of its presence in the product.

Q. Which Benadryl products contain Phenylalanine?
A. Benadryl Allergy/Cold Fastmelt and Benadryl Allergy & Sinus Fastmelt are formulated with this sweetener.

Q. What is the Diphenhydramine?
A. Diphenhydramine is an active ingredient in Benadryl. It is an antihistamine with anticholinergic (drying) and sedative side effects. Antihistamines appear to compete with histamine for cell receptor sites.

Q. Do any of the Benadryl products contain gluten?
A. We do not specifically test for the presence of gluten in our products. Therefore, we cannot certify them to be gluten free. While we can tell you that there are no gluten-containing grains in this product, we cannot guarantee that cross-contamination with gluten did not occur in the manufacturing process.

Q. Do any of the Benadryl products contain animal derived ingredients?
A. Yes, all of the Benadryl products contain some animal derivatives or animal by-products.
I didnt know that.

Q. Are the Benadryl products kosher?
A. No, none of the Benadryl products have had rabbinical supervision and are not considered Kosher.

Q. Are the Benadryl products manufactured in a peanut-free facility?
A. Yes. Neither peanuts nor peanut oils are used in any parts of our manufacturing plants.

Q. Do any of the Benadryl products contain aspirin?
A. No. All of the Benadryl products are aspirin free.

Q. Why is there a warning on the package about taking sedatives or tranquilizers with Benadryl?
A. Diphenhydramine may cause marked drowsiness. This effect may be increased if you are currently taking sedatives or tranquilizers, or if you use alcohol. If you are currently taking a sedative or tranquilizer, you must first check with your physician to determine if this is an appropriate medication for you to take.

Q. Can I use Benadryl Cream and still take Benadryl?
A. No, since you will be getting a dose of diphenhydramine from two sources.

Q. Can I use Benadryl while pregnant/breastfeeding?
A. Consult with your health care provider before using Benadryl if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

It makes me groggy too. But what a deep sleep. LOVE THE SLEEP. It takes about 2 hours to get moving after a benadryl nite.

Did you take one or two? I just usually take one and I've been doing this on and off for years. so i have a tolerance.

Why did you take benadryl?

Dr. T (the CFS doc who wrote "From Fatigued to Fantastic") recommends using liquid kiddie Benadryl to help with sleep. The sugarless, colorless, alcoholless bubble gum flavor kind. It has helped me, and doesn't leave you hungover the next day.

I felt like I'd been run over by a truck after taking Benadryl. I took it a few more times and felt awful in the morning. Next I got a petechial rash over much of my body.

I'll never take it again.
hats

P.S. I used the dye free benadryl so it wasn't a reaction to the coloring.

A cautionary note about extended use of benadryl. A few years back I was taking a Benadryl every night to help with sleep. After a few months, I had a constant need to urinate. Felt like I needed to all the time, whether I needed to or not. After many tests, I found a urologist who said "Stop the benadryl and the urge will go away"...evidently there is a chemical in it that can cause this sideeffect. I stopped and it went away overnight. It was easier to try to deal with the sleep problem some other way.
