Hi caat and others, I read one thread about how bart can cause seizures?
I started taking it and for the first 3days I felt great and then felt like AI was at ground zero.
Got a mini seizure for the first time, the back of my head would not stop trmebling and I cold smell burning iron. I stopped the Rifampin only to have green veins coming across my face and symptoms worsened.
Should I still take it, are seizures a good sign, worsens and then goes away?
Also caat, u mentioned that bart's hard to eradicate cause it affects the bones?
Can it affcet deep tissues as well ? Does it grow on the bones? i have a problem with them.
thanks
L

Hi LynLiz,

I don't know the answer to most of your questions.

Bart can effect the bones. It doesn't always but it can sometimes. I don't how it effects the bones. Bart and lyme and babesia can cause seizures I think.

I don't know anything about seizures except they're a bad thing even if they're a herx. I've never had one.

It sounds like you are relapsing if you've stopped your treatment? But you need to call your doctor and talk about this before going back on it I think.

Green veins doesn't sound like a drug reaction to me. You definitely need to talk to a doctor about that. How green are they? Are you looking at blue veins under a yellow light or are they definitely green? Any chance of blood poisoning? If so- you should go to the emergency room.

Don't panic, take a good look at those veins and go to the ER if you need to. Maybe you should go anyway having had a seizure?

I hope things get better very soon. Hang in there.

I ramped up on bart treatment a couple of different ways, and the full dose of rifampin is still causing the rage you describe. But the rest of your symptoms make it sound like you jumped in too quickly. Don't worry, you can start slowly and still get rid of it.

Here's some stuff you can do, assuming you are sure you have bart: start with one month of just bactrim (also called septra). It is a sulfa drug, however, so make sure you do not have any allergies or sensitivities to it. Keep at it until you've stopped getting a herx, which you probably will. Then either continue with bactrim, or switch to ketek or zithromax, and start on rifampin 150mg/2x day as a companion drug. Bart tends to respond better to a two-drug combination, and Lymenetters have described all three of these combinations as working for them. Some people even start out on rifampin 50mg/2x day, and still see a big change.

I did two months of just septra, then switched to ketek and 150mg/2x day rifampin for three or four months. Although I am officially telling you not to do this, and will deny it if you haul me into court, what I did was open up the 300mg rifampin capsules, pour half into an empty gel cap (which are sold in bags of 1000 at your local vitamin store), and take those.

Even after all this, I've been herxing and stomping around on the full rifampin dose. But so far, it is working.

I address the rage by taking Celebrex, a prescription drug that you would definitely want to research first, since it can cause problems for people, and theanine, a vitamin store supplement that is absolutely no problem at all. Some people have said bromelain, another vitamin store product, is an excellent natural anti-inflammatory, although I've never tried it.

Hey - my 15 y/o was just dx'd w/ Bart (not a new infection tho - just found it!)

Dr. J rx'd Cipro + Zith.

I started her w/ 1 Cipro and after 4 days, she's reporting "stinging" and "burning" pain in her calves - not a normal symptom.

Has anyone experienced this as a symptom or herx w/ Bart treatment? It's not a tendon pain or joint pain - sounds "neuro" to me and I have experienced this pain - nothing will help it!!

I'm planning to start full dose Cipro on Sunday - giving her about 7 days at the half dose! Then, 7 days of full dose Cipro before adding Zith.

Just curious about the pain she's describing.

Thanks,
Sherry
