Just started playing guitar again recently. I type all the time so didn't think it was a big deal. But now notice a few nails on my strumming hand are lifting up from the nail bed creating a lot of white nail tip. My ring finger is half way down the center. pinky finger has it too.

Any ideas? Marnie, maybe you've dealt with this and can give some suggested vitamin treatment?

I'm not Marnie, but are you on Doxy at all?

We've seen this before with Doxy and other photosensitizers - your fingernail beds get sunburned and your nails fall off.

Not to worry, they grow back! But if this is from Doxy, you've got to watch your sun exposure - wear gloves when driving and all that.

I got it BAAAAD from a month of Doxy, despite being what I thought was really careful!! Man, was I sensitive on that stuff. My thumbnails are brownish-black still, nearly three months later. They want to lift off completely. I keep trimming them so I don't catch them on anything and have them pop off before a new nail is ready underneath.

Got a feeling I don't wanna see THAT!!!

If you don't need the nails for guitar strumming, I'd trim them really short so they don't lift off before their time..

Thanks guys, actually I am on 300mg doxy and 250 zith.

I got extremely burned on vacation near the ocean in August. Exposed hands and feet. Just had some peeling last week (a month later).

When I saw llmd, he said it probably went right through the nail.

Thanks for helping me. I think you are exactly right. This is probably the result of the healing process.

I agree with Mikken.

His (or her) description is correct, it's caused from the phototoxicity side effect of the abx.

... not part of a healing process.

I had that start to happen (on either Doxy or Mino - would have to look up which it was).

Mine reattached fairly quickly when I stopped the abx. Next round with the abx it didn't happen.

Barb, yes I agree also.

This phototoxicity happened during vacation. UV was at a high near the ocean and temps were near 100-degrees for the week. The salt, sun, sand and heavy air is far different from being mid-land in my backyard. Mid-week, I stopped the doxy until the end of vacation. I was in pain from the burn but didn't know it would go through my nails.

It appears to me that the areas under the nail that were burned are now growing out. You can see the new growth and the burned areas coming closer to the whites of the nail... that is what I meant about healing.

The skin around the tips of my toes and balls of my foot just peeled over last weekend. The damaged areas are in recovery. My guitar playing stimulated the separation of the nail from the burned area.

I did not pull the whole picture together until this was mentioned.

Carol, I don't think you are confusing this issue at all by posting this, actually this was a very good idea to bring this up.

I don't know if you heard of the Road Back Foundation, but they are saying Dr. Brown was treating people with psoriasis with long term ABX, and getting remission status in a good number of patients.

A lot of symptoms of Lyme and psoriasis are shared. I also have psoriasis to a slight degree, along with the white nail pulling. It comes and goes. It all started at about 13 years of age for me, following a bad flu like illness (which may have been initial Lyme infection). I lived in PA, and I explored the woods around the house, often seeing deer. Many frieds are sick in that area with MS, Lupus and Lyme.

Even though I got sick at about 24, I think it was when I was 13 when it started.

It's known that people take 'salt baths' at certain wells in Europe. (Forget where.)

People note that their psoriasis clears up, if not put into remission for a long time.

We know that salt kills pathogens, so this may make sense.

FYI, Psoriasis has been linked to Lyme and Candida.

So far there has been no discoveries linking psoriasis with any genetic defect.

It would be an interesting poll to take on this site to see:

A: How many people have psoriasis?
B: How many cases of psoriasis were cleared or cured once the Lyme and or co-infections were cleared.

I think I also heard that psoriasis can be linked to a sluggish Liver, but I don't know much about that. Unless the Lyme and Candida may produce toxins that the Liver tries to filter, but gets overwhelmed, thus spilling the toxins into the skin, causing a rash.

You're not alone. Two years ago, before my current doctor was treating me and before I was better educated in Lyme issues, I agreed to take doxycycline for 3 weeks (in July, in a coastal town - madness!) and in spite of my caution I burned very badly. Bandaged hands, burned and peeling face, and yes, bad burns right through the fingernails. Hope this info. supports the other comments and helps you to make sense of what's happening. I healed quickly from that incident. Good luck.

You guys are great! Thanks so much for all of this. Carol, you are assisting me in longterm education and possibilities arising with the illness. I sincerely appreciate it.

I discussed this with my doc the other day and will stay on top of it and then pursue the necessary treatment by dermatologist.

Cap: I bought a copy of "The Road Back" by Thomas McPherson Brown, in the early 90's.

My sister had been diagnosed with Scleroderma, and I was looking for anything that might help her.

She completely dismissed the whole idea, even after I sent her a copy of the book. She wanted to stick with mainstream medicine.

I just looked the book up at Amazon, and I see that there are now several other books with the same theme.

So it's been more than 15 years since Dr. Brown tried to publicise his findings, and the rheumatologists still aren't "getting it."

Big big sigh....

They're also a LOT stronger than they've ever been.

I don't know if anyone posted this or not but it can be caused by funus infections...the cure is nasty.. well it made my stomach freak out..
