OK, so I am feeling better now for about 3 weeks. I see LLMD on the 16th. He was talking about Bicillin at our last session. I wonder what we do now? Any ideas, feedback, experience? Blessings, Marblenose Posted by Linda LD (Member # 6663) on :
Never been there myself--but from what I hear--when you quit herxing you are done!
Good luck!

What is "herxing"?
Posted by Starphoenix (Member # 2402) on :
Karinlee: Herxing is a nickname for "Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction." It's named for these dudes who discovered the phenomenon with Syphilis.
When the germs die off, you may experience a worsening of symptoms. It's the ol' "worse before it gets better" scenario. It's from toxins and, well, dead bug parts.

Marblenose,
I am a fan of L.A. Bicillin because I herxed from it right away and it has its pros and cons:
Pros:
-I get it once a week as opposed to the doxy that I take twice a day that I have to watch what I eat with -Doesn't seem to have many side effects (except unless you are allergic to it - so make sure you stay after your first injection for 30 minutes) -Seems to have a pretty good track record according to those here on Lymenet and others I talk to
Cons: -Cost -Not very fun shots - they make the injection site sore for a day or two -Medicine is in short supply so can be hard to find -According to my LLMD only gets to the spirochete form of lyme
Final note - MAKE SURE YOU GET L.A. BICILLIN AND NOT BICILLIN C.R. - Bicillin C.R. has procaine in it and if I remember right doesn't have as long of a half life as L.A. and is not nearly as effective at treating lyme. On the up side it doesn't hurt hardly at all because of the procaine (I had my meds switched on accident and found out the hard way), but doesn't matter if it doesn't do you any good!
Good luck if you decide to do the L.A. Bicillin!

Personaly I wouldnt go off abx's until there was no herx for at least 6 months but most go off after 3or4 months after no herx Or symptoms.
ps for Karinlee Member # 7839 posted 06 September, 2005 05:50 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is "herxing"?

Yes, don't stop abx until you are symptom free for a minimum of 2 months....or 6 as tree says! Posted by Monica (Member # 224) on :
According to my LLMD, when you don't herx, we switch abx. We don't stop treating with abx until all symptoms are gone.
Can't wait for that to happen!

I ended up in the hospital which is why I have been off them for 3 weeks now. My stomach could no longer handle the anbx. LLMD said to take a break. I am feeling better. Very curious! Blessings, Marblenose

Marble...the same thing happened to me several times. Unless you were symptom free before stopping the abx, I would say keep going.
You may feel OK for a month or more, but it will likely not last.

Hi marblenose,
I am so fortunate to have the LLMD that I have in my area. Had a follow up yesterday and asked this exact question. He said when I come to him, symptom free, saying I feel great, that we will continue for a bit more then stop. He expects a relapse of some sort and then we start again. That scenario may continue for a while but relapses will get farther apart and symptoms will get less. He explained that eventually the immune system will work correctly and eradicte whatever remaining bacteria. This doctor is so kind and absolutely believes his patients and also believes they will get better. Hope that helps, it helped me!
Oh yeah. He also said his patients are usually very bright and well researched and he enjoys that. Hello?? Am I really talking to a doctor??
