Is bartonella mostly contracted from ticks or cats? When I think back to when I first became ill, I was scratched by a friends' cat on my hand. I don't recall a papule forming, but I do remember the scratch became irritated and really red. Wasn't too long after this that everything hit the fan for me. I added Cipro to my regimen a month ago. I'm feeling really crappy the last week.... Tons of pains (some new), in elbows, hips, legs and feet. REALLY tired and my twitches are firing up big time. Today I noticed two small lesion-like things on my upper left chestnear my collar bone. Like a snake bite, but bigger. I remember seeing something like this on my neck many months ago but thought nothing of it. Is this a bartonella herx?

Someone here had an article about the bartonella contracted from a cat scratch and from a tick. Very interesting. Maybe you can find it on the internet if no one shows up with that info.

Cat scratch fever thats probaly how you got it.Did the cat ever get treated? if not its still infected and passing it a long.

I don't know if this cat was ever treated. I believe it is fine. Although I don't talk to these friends very often any more. They don't understand my limitations and take it personally that I can't hang out or go to bars. If I implied that their cat made me sick, the friendship would be even more strained!

My daughter has Bartonella also. Dr. J asked if she could have suffered a cat scratch because if she had, then he would have considered that as how she got infected. He said if she was infected by a scratch then it would have gotten red and infected within a few days of the scratch. Sounds like that is what happened to you. Good Luck with treatment.

I don't have Bart, though I wish I had a dime -- even a penny -- for every cat scratch I've gotten over the last 49 years and 8 months (and counting). How common is cat scratch fever, I wonder? Anyway, I've been on petfinder.com looking for a cat to adopt lately (don't email me, I found some already nearby) and I noted one entry under the "special needs pets" category for a cat who has tested positive for Bart and who has been treated, but needs an owner who can watch this problem and re-treat if the illness surfaces again. I hardly know what to make of this. I didn't even know they tested cats for this.
