I've been on ABX (different ones/different length of times) since testing positive for Bb, Babs, & Bart in May.

Three weeks ago I started Biaxin XL & Bactrim. I had blood work done last week and got a call from the Dr. yesterday that my liver tests were elevated.

I took Biaxin XL in the beginning of the summer and subsequent labwork did not show any abnormality. So what I'm wondering is if this all has to do with the Bactrim?

My tummy hasn't been feeling great for about the past week and I was trying to convince myself that it was a virus of some sort.

Now with the abnormal lab results, I don't know what to think.

Is my tummy pain from the antibiotics? Is it from my liver being inflamed? Is the pain from yeast (since I don't know what yeast in the tummy feels like)

LLMD prescribed taking 600mg of Milk Thistle and wants me to be re-tested in 2 weeks.

Anyone have this result from Bactrim or any other ABX? I am taking pro-biotics - Digesta Guard 2X a day - and also a Mg supplement as my blood work showed a low reading on Mg.

How high are the enzymes and which ones are out of spec?

My liver enzymes are a bit high often but nothing very extreme and they always come back to normal range.

When i was on an azithromycine, bactrim and minocycline combo, my bilirubin went up slightly to 23 but a week after disconitnuing the drugs it was fine again. On fluconazole my liver enzymes get raised slightly more. After a round of 6 weeks at 300 mg per day, my bilirubin was 28 and should be below 17 mmol / L i think.

I used milk thistly for a while, but still got slightly raised liver enzymes, and recentlty on the recommendation of someone on this board i started using hepa formula 2 from dr zhang, which is supposed to be very good, and the blood tests results were a bit better than on the milk thistle.

I am being carefull though with any intereactions, especially with the CYP3A4 pathway. Both Shisandra (hepa formula) and fluconazole are potent inhibitors of this, and therefore i have so far only taken the hepa formula while taking a break from the fluconazole...

Adios

Thanks so much for responding. I don't know which part of the tests were abnormal. Only talked to the nurse in LLMD's office and guess I was too flustered at the time to ask specific questions.

I had viral hepatitis (hep-A) 30 years ago with elevated bilirubin, so I know what to look for with that. This just scared me as it is the first adverse reaction I've had since starting treatment.

I think I am more worried that the Dr. will have to discontinue the ABX and maybe I won't be able to get rid of the darn bugs!

But I am encouraged that if your case is average, that maybe slightly elevated liver enzymes won't be too much to worry about.

I have another blood test in 2 weeks. Will see what it shows then. I'm relatively new to this board - what is hepa formula 2 and where do you get it? If my enzymes are still up, I would like to mention it to my Dr.

The illness itself can do this as well, at least in me. When I was extremely ill I had one abnormal liver enzyme figure, just once - it went back down, and this was all before treatment. I have no idea how common disease-caused liver stress is in our population, compared with liver stress caused by drugs.

Castrong:
Although Dr. Zhang's website http://www.dr-zhang.com/
apparently has been dismantled, his products are still for sale at Hepapro.
http://www.hepapro.com/

You can click on "Hepa No. 2 Formula" at the bottom to see the ingredients.

You can click on "Order online" to find the price.

If you set it up to order monthly, you will get a discount for the third month's order. This does offset the high price.

I just wish I had made copies of the information about treating Lyme at Dr. Zhang's site. He had so much good info, explaining what each product did.

Carol in PA - Thanks for the links. I will look into the Hepa No. 2 formula. I am going to ask my LLMD about it when I have bloodwork done next week if my liver enzymes are still elevated.

My tummy problems that I wrote about last week have thankfully subsided, so maybe it really was just a virus.

With so many SX's pointing to LD, it's hard to know when something starts hurting whether to just blame it on LD or worry that it really is something different that needs attention.

I have had two bouts of raised liver enzymes while on abx.

First was IV rochepin and I was hospitalised coz the liver enzymes were very elevated and I had full body rash and headache that made me suicidal.

Second time I was rushed to ER after collapsing at work while on mepron/zith. not as badly elevated then.

Liver enzymes can be radically elevated and still be pretty much okay. They have to double or more before you are in trouble.

Both of these times have been attributed to Herx reactions. BOth times I had URQ pain. Both times the liver repaired it self pretty quickly.

Good luck!
